Outside of the "elite" programs, which jobs do you think are the best in college football?

I think, based on available talent to recruit in the area, weakness of competition, and fan support, the following are great jobs:

TCU
Virginia Tech

A good coach can make the CFP at these two schools.

I've heard that Napier likes the Virginia Tech job. I think that would be a good move for him, if it comes open.

are you referring to open positions or just the best jobs?

I know TCU has the ability to pay big money. And I think Patterson probably left them in a good situation.

If Rutgers can start recruiting well in NJ and PA, it can be a decent team, though the conference is tough. Schiano is going to do well there.

Best jobs, outside of the elite. Not just open jobs.

You can use your own criteria, but I'm talking about where you can win. Not just a school that can pay a bunch of money.

Would seem like you’d want to factor in quality of life. With USC and UCLA down, it would seem like Cali mid-majors might be attractive. San Diego State or something like that… I don’t know a lot about the university, but living in San Diego and having access to California’s recruiting riches would seem like a good situation

I've always thought that if UCLA got a coach who knew what they were doing that they could be very competitive. It's an attractive city to young kids, the weather is nice, hot girls, good academics. It's a fertile recruiting area. If a coach ever got them playing extremely well you would have an easier time convincing players to stay home and you could swing some of those USC guys over. Now is a good time to considering how mediocre they've been. Also, you just need to beat 1-2 solid teams every year and you should be good.

Outside of these schools:

Bama
OHio St
Michigan
ND
USC
Texas
UGA
OU
LSU
Florida
Auburn
FSU
Oregon
Clemson
Tennessee
Penn st
Miami

I would say:

TCU (fertile recruiting plus commitment from school to football)

Cincy (same as TCU)

North Carolina (great school, sneaky good recruiting from east coast schools, Jordan brand)

NcSt (same as UNC minus Jordan brand)

Memphis

I almost made Memphis the third school on my list, but I considered ability to make the CFP in my criteria and it would be very hard for them.

At TCU or Virginia Tech, if you win your conference there is a good chance you will make it. If you go undefeated, basically guaranteed.

You've got to be kidding. If we're going to throw random shite at the wall, I think Vanderbilt can become elite if they lower their GPA requirement.

Louisville
Iowa
Wisconsin

If Iowa and Wisconsin would move away from that Stone Age offense they could be lethal.

I remember when TCU dropped from #3 to #6 in the final playoff rankings after winning 55-3 the week prior. Big 12 really screwed them out of the playoff by not having a conference championship game.

Arizona, Arkansas (right coach), North Carolina, Syracuse, Iowa, probably forgetting some.

If we're talking sleeping giants, I think Arizona State is the one I'd go with. They shouldn't be as bad as they are and they have everything you'd expect a top program to have

I agree. They were the one Pac 12 team I considered putting in my OP.

There are great jobs in every conference

I would say Arizona St because of Arizona Jucos and proximity to California would be one. Another one that never really gets thought of, Oklahoma St. Now that Pickens has upgraded everything, they have NEO Kansas Jucos, they have not hard admissions, pipelines into Texas, good to great fan support, and Gundy has rebuilt what Simmons destroyed. San Diego St could be one on the G5 level that could get interesting, decent history, has the city to themselves, problem is the administration sticks their noses into things that they should not.

A few things help, many of the schools that fall slightly outside of "elite" will have many, but not all of the factors.
Access to talent rich areas.
Little in-conference competition.
1 or 0 in-state rivals.
Major school brand.

Schools like Cincy, Louisville, Boise, Utah, TCU, FSU, Clemson, Va Tech, Pitt, WV, Houston.... Can hang around the periphery and jump into the Top 10 with good teams.
Group of 5 teams. Teams from ACC/ BIG12 / old Big East.

The question wasn’t about an elite program.

In any event, New Jersey is a top 10 talent producing state that Rutgers has all to itself. Penn State is the closest powerhouse. It’s about on par with Michigan and ahead of Mississippi.

If Rutgers can lock down New Jersey the way LSU locks down Louisiana, it can be a perennial top 25 school (or just outside). Schiano showed what Rutgers could be during their 2006-2011 seasons.

Rutgers's problem is that no one takes the program seriously, especially in New Jersey and it's probably gotten worse since moving to the Big Ten.

New Jersey itself is just a weird state. Half of the state considers itself part of New York and the other half considers itself part of Philadelphia. You don't really have a 'state loyalty' phenomenon there. For Rutgers to truly be successful you'd have to build success over the course of 20 years to change the local mindset and I just don't see that happening.
