I agree with that but that’s in part because they never invested in the football program and it’s been down so long. Theres no reason NJ would respond to a good Rutgers program less than states like Ohio or Michigan or Pennsylvania respond to their teams.

Schiano had Rutgers going in the right direction the first go around. If he stayed I think they’d currently be the type of program I envision. I don’t think it’ll take 20 years. I don’t think they’ll be a top 10 team outside of fluke years, but you could build a 20 year career there like Patterson did at tcu.

Growing up in va around a bunch of hokies naturally made me have disdain towards their program.

Would be pissed if Napier ends up there. If they can lock down VA recruiting they could be top tier

Really depends on what you consider "elite."

Programs that have been major underachievers but could be good:

ASU
Arizona
Illinois
NCST
UNC
Colorado
Mizzou

I would say Cal Berkeley. Absolute stunning campus, proximity to everything in the Bay, never mind the fact that there is huge money there. It’s truly an academic university first, but if the right coach went there it could easily flourish. Plenty enough talent in CA to go around.

I used to live in VA and those folks love their Hokies. That has always been an “on the cusp” program- kind of in the second tier. At least until the last few years. That’s a very good job in a hotbed of recruiting. When they’re good, they can go down to Hampton Roads and have their pick. Can also go up to DC/Baltimore area.

Hampton Roads area is one of the best recruiting areas in the entire country.

I was about to say TCU after reading the title.

In Texas, they can pay well and you win there and can get hired anywhere.

Cincinnati is another. They invested a lot in their campus and coaches have shown you can win there.

Charlotte- booming population, solid talent base that will only grow

Kentucky- good geography to recruit southeast and Midwest, invests enough in football to compete but still 2nd fiddle to basketball

Maryland- similar geography to Kentucky, elite talent base and the only game in town

Houston and Cincy for reasons mentioned in another thread: in the middle of talent-rich areas and have financial commitment

Healy is doing wonderful at charlotte. A friend of mine is an alum so I follow them loosely.

If Iowa and Wisconsin would move away from that Stone Age offense they could be lethal.

Neither has fired a coach in over a generation and probably won't in the next.
