after the Egg Bowl, what are Auburn fans’ thoughts on the hire?

Lane Kiffin has shown that he is adept at working the portal, so he may have Auburn back as a competitive program sooner rather than later, but as for building an elite program, he is a bit of an unknown commodity.

What do you Auburn guys think?

I can’t decide if I’m gonna be more pissed when Kififn goes for it on 4th down and 3 from the 10, instead of taking points than watching Gus teams run the whirlybird with a FB at QB. I said it on the AU board that we have hired the obvious choice once in my life. That was Bruce Pearl, I think Kiffin is the obvious choice and I expect similar results to Pearl.

QB and O-Line are #1, #2 we have seen how Defense usually lags behind in rebuilds (even with transfer portal.) Ole Miss year 1, Tennessee, Arkansas, Michigan State were all teams that ascended quickly offensively but the defense understandably lagged behind. LSU 2022 is kind of an outlier example as we had some good bones in the front seven and we managed to hit on an absurd number of defensive backs. (As well as a hit at DC). If he can convince some of the Auburn players to stay he could be left with a similar framework of front seven talent.

What I’d be more worried about is if this does happen, it kinda sets the Kiffin is a flake narrative into stone and I see every coach surrounded him playing that card in the recruiting game. He’s going to not only have to convince players to come play at Auburn, but also convince kids he will be there by their junior/senior year.

the more leaks that come out that its Kiffin, the more likely it is that OM is about to give him a huge extension. This is the Jimmy Sexton way.

8 days is a long time in the coaching search world.

i dont see how the auburn family wouldnt be thrilled. question still remains if he can maintain success long term for more than a 2 year period, he has never shown that ability.

but unless you get freeze...who else you gonna get that is even close to lane??

I don’t know how much stock to put into this, but Josh Pate said on his podcast that Hugh Freeze is untouchable for Auburn and most SEC schools for what he called “administrative issues.” I think he may be referring to a theory that he was using that burner phone to get hookers for recruits, not himself.

Kiffin is a great hire if they can land him for a fair market value of a promising coach with no conference or national titles. If they throw a Jimbo style no buyout type contract at him they are crazy, especially with his history of flaming out at big programs. Pay the man, but don't get desperate as if he's the only answer.

i always thought this was what was happening. Not even mad though...but as a recruit...why would you take that over some of the fine arse on teh OM campus??

I think you're understating how bad the Rebs' defense was in 2020.

38.3 ppg (dead last in the SEC, 117/127 in D1)
519.0 total yards per game (dead last in the SEC, 126/127 in D1)
312.1 passing yards per game (13/14 in the SEC, thanks to LSU, 125/127 in D1)
206.9 rushing yards/game (dead last in the SEC, 101/127 in D1)

when you steal a coach very little gets leaked this soon, see both Riley and Kelly last year. Neither were really linked to either job until right before it went official despite both deals being in the works for weeks.

I think Neil Mccready doesn't know near as much as he is acting like he does.

He is stoking a fire to help Ole Miss, Sexton is playing everyone or both.

I smell shite, not saying it doesn't happen, but I think the game is still being played by many sides.

They can only offer a 4 year contract in total. They are probably only willing to go to 10 M

My guess is a 7 year 9.5-11m deal with Auburn 70-80% guarantee. OM can't or won't match that over four years.

How could you not be excited going from Mr. Potato Head Harsin to Lane Train?

The Foundation can pay him as many years as he wants. It would be just a public number that is maxed at 4 years. We could pay him 10 years 10 mil if we wanted too. But publicly it would say 4 years 10 mil a year.

-Sexton reaches agreement with AU, AU boosters think they have landed him and start the leaks. Chaos ensues at Ole Miss
-Sexton takes agreement back to OM, OM matches and then some
-Sexton goes back to AU with latest OM terms...He either gets told GFY or Auburn gets stupid with the offer.

There are ways around this through the athletic foundation.

The only way Auburn takes Kiffin is a Jimbo like contract and also probably financial documents proving NIL numbers.
