Grew up and was teammates with Marcus Freeman at Wayne High School. The two are very close. Most assume ND will pull this one off. Ed and Scott better bring out the big guns.

If we don’t land Freeman it’s not because his buddy coaches at Notre Dame. He’s a grown arse man with 6 kids and a career not an 18 year old kid worried about where his friends are going to school

I think everyone should temper their expectations. It will be tough to get Freeman to LSU.

Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and do everything reasonable to get him, but at the end of the day it’s probably an uphill climb for a team like us not in the Midwest/Big10 where his ultimate ambitions ly.

You know his ambitions?

I dont think anyone knows for sure where he'll decide to go, probably not even Freeman himself right now. LSU has the best DC opening right now, and highest paying available also. If he chooses ND, then yes he stayed to stay in the midwest. But he may sign with us.

His ultimate ambition is to be the head coach of Ohio State.

The last Notre Dame dc got a job at Vandy and the one before that went lateral to A&M.

We have a former DC at Baylor and a former PGC getting interviews for NFL head coaching jobs.

Which seems more attractive?

Yes, of all things Freeman will base his decision on it's an old buddy he was friends with on ND's staff. Nevermind the fact LSU has an opening for a S coach right now if it was ever on his mind...which it's not I'm sure.

Are we to believe that O will use that on field spot for safeties?

And Aranda and Herman were big buddies, too. At the end of the day, coaches go (or stay) where the money and opportunities are.

The point I'm making is they could find a spot on the staff if they wanted to. It's pretty stupid to assume he's basing a decision around Mickens. He's not an 18-year-old recruit to ND.

Proximity may be a selling point for them and possibly location living over LSU for his family. Everything else will favor LSU. He has a faster track to a HC job right now at LSU. Both universities are similar. They're not built for sustained elite winning every year they make their run every few years. ND's defense will be behind LSU who's returning almost everyone. LSU is more talented in the toughest division. You do well there you get instant notice.

He'll get paid more at LSU than anywhere else and boosters will make his family comfortable. The question is whether he wants to move his family down here. Auburn, Texas, Michigan on paper are not relevant talent wise right now. He'd have a much more difficult job if he wanted instant success.

Either LSU has to frick up royally in conversations with this guy, or he's dead set on a factor LSU can't match like proximity to lose out on him. The best opportunity is LSU it's not even close right now. ND will scale back next year. He may bring the investigations up which would be an interesting conversation and I could see that as possibly too much baggage to go to LSU in risks of a purge on the staff.

If money is his main factor I could see a bidding war with him. I don't know how that would play out considering universities like Texas have deeper pockets than us. LSU has the highest paid staff though I doubt they'd let Texas roll right over us for a guy we want. I think if it came down to this LSU would move on though because if you offer 2.5 and the guy doesn't take it that's starting to get ludicrous when you look at the salaries around the league.

He won’t. Raymond wants the defensive backs room and he’s going to get it

More than having the defensive backs room, he wants Callaway to get promoted and he's gonna get it.

They have enough spots for all 3.

Raymond will take the entire secondary back.

Who makes life choices when you have a family because you can work with your buddy? They're not exactly partners in a brewery

No they don't. Even the ND insiders said they would bet on LSU right now because ND won't match the money

There is a reason he left without a deal being done yesterday

Everything I’ve read from their insiders think ND is the one to beat. Not saying I don’t think we have a shot to pull it off but we need to understand this is not some shoe in.

That's right and most fans on here are too emotional to accept that. Everyone is conveniently forgetting title ix, ND was in the playoffs this year while lsu was 5-5, etc. There are positives and negatives to both jobs. up and coming coaches have become more cautious about making the leap after watching many fail miserably. I have no clue what's most important to Freeman and neither do any of the people on this board so it's comical to think that the lsu job is leaps and bounds better than the ND job in Freeman's mind.
