Proven winner everywhere he's been

Mediocre to terrible at offensive game planning and game management. Head-scratching playcalling. Often has no Plan B, much less Plan C, when Plan A isn't working on offense.
- Will often leave more talented and even game-breaking players on the bench in favor of lesser-talented - and in some cases, far less talented - players he considers more fundamentally sound.
- Plays not to lose instead of playing aggressively to win.
- Often struggles to beat teams that have far less talent and gets blown out in big games. Very poor record against Top 10 teams.
The above quotes seem to contradict each other. He is a proven winner.

unless he makes some fundamental changes to how he goes about things, you are likely in for what we experienced: Playing down to the competition and not being competitive against the Alabamas and Georgias, or any other team that is legit. But as I said, there's a balance. He's a proven winner and will win you a lot of games. Will he take you to the mountaintop once again? Personally, I doubt it,
He has tried to be as polite as possible when saying he wanted to come to LSU, "...to coach the best players, with the best resources, against the best teams." I interpret this to say that he was doing the best he could with the resources he had, got the best players he could within the parameters he had to work, and was unable to compete at the level he dreams of competing, therefore made the move to LSU. It all seems to support what he has said, just from a fan's prospective. Thanks for sharing the info. I hope he fulfills his dreams at LSU.

Thanks for this info. This message has been very consistent, good and bad, among all ND followers. Unfortunately hope is not a strategy.

Some of you are saying it's not a big deal about almost none of his assistants following him to Baton Rouge, saying Nick Saban had the same experience after leaving Michigan State. Remember, at the time Saban was not considered the cream of the crop like Kelly is perceived to be. It is common for assistants to follow an elite coach in a coaching change - look at Lincoln Riley to USC, for example. Mike Elston, who has followed Kelly at every stop and is about as loyal as it gets, chose this time to stay at Notre Dame. BK alienated his whole coaching staff by how he handled this, but it goes beyond that.
What it says to me is ND is throwing the bank at and promoting all that they can in order to keep them on staff to retain some continuity. If ND had hired anyone but Freeman as head coach, every one of these coaches would have jumped ship with BK.

Lol I hear you my guy but we’ve won a championship with a cheerleader as a head coach he doesn’t need to be perfect to win here but thanks for your unwanted input

Another way to look at it as to why they aren’t coming here is simply the competition level. Maybe they are afraid that by following BK here there jobs might be in question in a few years. Those coaches are under the microscope day in and day out win or lose. Maybe they see them staying there as the path of least resistance.
Lincoln didn’t want anything to do with the SEC. Who knows exactly why some won’t come here and frankly I don’t care. I do know that not every coach wants to be thrown in to the SECW. Apparently, BK does.

I was listening to Catholic Jordy and they seemed relieved he’s gone. They were criticizing Kelly’s ability to recruit/develop elite talent at QB and that was preventing them from getting over the top. Brian Kelly has achieved just that on day #1 at LSU. In fact, he achieved that before he knew he wanted the job here.

Yep you are an attention seeking troll. The reason I know is the collect of context you’ve assembled from other posts on this board. Everything you said is just a consolidation of the thoughts and concerns/questions of LSU fans. And you really drove home your negative points. Because that was the purpose of your troll post.
I don’t believe you are a Notre Dame fan.

He was there 12 years. Most of the reaction from ND fans is they were left at the altar.
That's all we need to know.

Notre Dame has plenty of 4-star talent
Okay, Mr. 9 posts. You have now officially lost every bit of credibility you might have had.

Riley doesn't say hi. OU is not in the same situation as Notre Dame.
They're not playing for anything and none of those guys got promotions to stay at OU. Pretty big difference.

TLDR. But know without reading…
Sour grapes like the rest of the low talent ND blind faithful

Hi all. Not here to troll! As a longtime fan of Notre Dame (since 1970) and as someone who watches every play of every game, just wanted to give you my impressions of Brian Kelly that mirror pretty much what other Irish fans see. First, the pros: - Excellent judge of talent on the recruiting trail. Is amazing at spotting under-recruited and under-rated players. - Excellent at developing players, as evidenced by the number of players he's put into the NFL. - Teams play hard and with passion and effort. - Hires excellent assistants. - Proven winner everywhere he's been. Now, the cons: - Mediocre to terrible at offensive game planning and game management. General comments: - Some of you are glad Tommy Rees decided not to join him as offensive coordinator. While BK generally leaves the defensive game planning and playcalling to his coordinator, he has a heavy hand in the offense. Make no mistake - Rees may be the coordinator, but BK designed the playbook, does the game planning and, if not calling every specific play, definitely has a strong say in what is called. - Some of you are saying it's not a big deal about almost none of his assistants following him to Baton Rouge, saying Nick Saban had the same experience after leaving Michigan State. Remember, at the time Saban was not considered the cream of the crop like Kelly is perceived to be. Mike Elston, who has followed Kelly at every stop and is about as loyal as it gets, chose this time to stay at Notre Dame. BK alienated his whole coaching staff by how he handled this, but it goes beyond that. - You will find BK is not a nice guy. You can justify it by saying nice guys finish last, and he's there not to make friends and his job is to win. And I would agree with that. Just telling you what you're getting. - In summary, you will be happy with your new coach for a while. But unless he makes some fundamental changes to how he goes about things, you are likely in for what we experienced: Playing down to the competition and not being competitive against the Alabamas and Georgias, or any other team that is legit. But as I said, there's a balance. He's a proven winner and will win you a lot of games. Will he take you to the mountaintop once again? Personally, I doubt it, but no one can predict the future with any certainty. Good luck going forward!

"I don’t believe you are a Notre Dame fan.'
That's where you're wrong. I grew up watching the Lindsey Nelson replays every Sunday morning, from the days of Theismann, Gatewood and Ara.
Hey, we're all part of the brotherhood of the greatest sport there is. No harm meant, just having fun. But my thoughts on Kelly are how I and most of the fan base saw him. Knows how to win - up to a point. We'll see if he can break through at LSU.

Saban’s assistants hate him as well and it seemed to work out ok at Notre Dame for BK. Hard nosed no nonsense coaches like Saban and Kelly aren’t there to be liked.

Good. Some elite talents never had to learn how to play the game properly before college, so it sounds like he's not going to reward players that don't feel they need to hone their craft.
LSU has enough talent on their 2-deep to not defer to a player that puts the team in a worse position because he doesn't feel the need to develop as a player.
