ND fan's view of Brian Kelly

Hi all. Not here to troll! As a longtime fan of Notre Dame (since 1970) and as someone who watches every play of every game, just wanted to give you my impressions of Brian Kelly that mirror pretty much what other Irish fans see. First, the pros:
- Excellent judge of talent on the recruiting trail. Is amazing at spotting under-recruited and under-rated players.
- Excellent at developing players, as evidenced by the number of players he's put into the NFL.
- Teams play hard and with passion and effort.
- Hires excellent assistants.
- Proven winner everywhere he's been.
Now, the cons:
- Mediocre to terrible at offensive game planning and game management. Head-scratching playcalling. Often has no Plan B, much less Plan C, when Plan A isn't working on offense.
- Will often leave more talented and even game-breaking players on the bench in favor of lesser-talented - and in some cases, far less talented - players he considers more fundamentally sound.
- Plays not to lose instead of playing aggressively to win.
- Often struggles to beat teams that have far less talent and gets blown out in big games. Very poor record against Top 10 teams.
General comments:
- Some of you are glad Tommy Rees decided not to join him as offensive coordinator. While BK generally leaves the defensive game planning and playcalling to his coordinator, he has a heavy hand in the offense. Make no mistake - Rees may be the coordinator, but BK designed the playbook, does the game planning and, if not calling every specific play, definitely has a strong say in what is called.
- Some of you are saying it's not a big deal about almost none of his assistants following him to Baton Rouge, saying Nick Saban had the same experience after leaving Michigan State. Remember, at the time Saban was not considered the cream of the crop like Kelly is perceived to be. It is common for assistants to follow an elite coach in a coaching change - look at Lincoln Riley to USC, for example. Mike Elston, who has followed Kelly at every stop and is about as loyal as it gets, chose this time to stay at Notre Dame. BK alienated his whole coaching staff by how he handled this, but it goes beyond that.
- You will find BK is not a nice guy. You can justify it by saying nice guys finish last, and he's there not to make friends and his job is to win. And I would agree with that. Just telling you what you're getting.
- In summary, you will be happy with your new coach for a while. But unless he makes some fundamental changes to how he goes about things, you are likely in for what we experienced: Playing down to the competition and not being competitive against the Alabamas and Georgias, or any other team that is legit. But as I said, there's a balance. He's a proven winner and will win you a lot of games. Will he take you to the mountaintop once again? Personally, I doubt it, but no one can predict the future with any certainty. Good luck going forward!

The South breeds completely different animals as far as athletes down here.
Plus Kelly was hamstrung by NDs academic restrictions and still averaged 10/11 wins a year
BK is going to kill it at LSU with the level of talent that will be here. If two buffoons can compete in the SEC and win it, I’m pretty sure Kelly will do just fine.

I didn’t read your post. Way too long and BK is already here so it doesn’t matter.
Thanks though.

“Not being competitive”
Just out of curiosity, how do you think Les Miles or Ed Orgeron would have fared if they were leading Notre Dame in these big games. They managed to get to the top here. Brian Kelly will do just fine

He doesn’t have to coach nerds anymore who also can play football. He can coach athletic freaks that score 17 on the ACT and go to basket weaving classes

I don't care what ND and it's people think of Brian Kelly... If your not a Fightin' Tiger, Your Tigerbait!!

You say he struggles against bad teams but didn't he have a streak of like 40 games won straight against unranked teams? It's things like that you will probably miss about him. We've had enough of the emotion head coaches around here. Give me a business like approach for once.

Don't listen to any haters who show up. Thanks for the honest assessment.

Fair assessment.
A few things. I think context is important when considering why assts aren't following him. Freeman obviously, but even Rees is getting far more autonomy. Regarding other assts, they still have a chance at a CFP. I get it. The PROs you listed are things that are severely missing at LSU right now.
I'm concerned about the offensive game planning and hoping Kelly hires an OC with some experience and backbone.
I don't care about the nice guy mantra at all. Saban is a dickhead of the highest accord
P.s. there is a volume of elite talent that Kelly can get at LSU that he can't get at ND. You know that. Hell, Kelly told you that himself by coming here. That will change some things in and of itself
As others have stated, les miles and ed O were buffoons. Idiots. Eat grass and rip your shirt off buffoons.
We're excited about having a coach with some actual football knowledge

Kelly returned ND back to prominence. You'd think the faithful would be a little more grateful and gracious to the man who rescued you from a string of poor hires and getting skull drug by LSU in the sugar bowl.

Orgeron hired the right coaches to lead the team on offense and defense. Didn't you see what happened when he strucked out getting another good hire on both the offense and defense? That is what makes a HC not what Orgeron did by hiring the right coaches all over again. It is hard to do it and not see those great coaches leave for a HC and another to coach in the NFL.
Do not forget there are a lot better teams in the SEC now. Even Arkansas beat LSU! How is that not on other schools getting better by hiring better HCs and assistants? LSU will have to deal with tough west division once again! It isn't going to be a cake walk like 2019 when most of the teams weren't good enough.

The only thing a ND fan should do is thank BK for pulling their school out of the gutter.
I lived in Chicago before BK got there. Jimmy Claussen was supposed to be a savior.. that flopped. Few of my buddies went to law school in South Bend. Never enjoyed the atmosphere, everybody is such a blow hard.
BK wanted a new challenge, sometimes people just like a change. How the ND fanbase has handled this news has made y’all look petty, entitled and classless.
We don’t need fans coming to our page to tell what to think of the coach. I don’t really care what your motives are, pure or not.
You should build a damn statue for that man. He is the only reason your stuffy arse University is relevant.

I’m sure the promotions and raises have nothing to do with it

Winningest coach in program history. “But he’s mean and nobody likes him and he can’t win games.”

Sorry man, I live in the Midwest. ND people are so entitled. Mommy and Daddy gave them everything they ever wanted.
This is the first time somebody has ever told them “no” and it shows.

No offense but this post almost reads like you're trying to troll us by saying his negatives are identical to Les Miles. Not only that, it seems more obvious of a troll post when you put stuff out there like Elston not following him. Did he not get promoted to stay at ND? It's also difficult for a staff to just up and leave in the middle of a potential NC/playoff run especially when they're promoting guys from within. Freeman might be the luckiest first time HC ever. He should be thanking Kelly for the opportunity.
