My favorite part of Mississippi State's hire: Multiple sources confirmed MSU (and some other P5 schools this cycle) was assisted by a third-party firm that measured social media reaction to rumored and leaked candidates. Leach scored high/positive. God bless CFB.

Leach got a boost bc he’s popular on social media. I love this

Not how I would want my AD making a hire, but given the dire straights they were in after missing on a lot of dudes high on their list, it’s not the worst idea in this scenario to try to get a positive PR push when announcing a hire

Social media is basically a large sample focus group

Napier and Judge were the only two misses and Judge got offered by the Giants.

Well when you fire a guy as late in the process as they did with Moorhead, that’s a lot.

The only accomplishment of Tennessee football in the last 20 years.

That's exactly why MSU and Ole Miss hired who they did. They knew it would generate buzz and fan interest. No reasonable person thinks either dude is going to start ripping off SEC titles or even competing for the West, but they're splash hires who will create buzz around the programs.

It’s like coaches that recruit off recruit rankings.

Tweet didn't say anything about the testing being used in a decision. He could be both the right decision and the most popular.

After Tennessee was struck by this, I guess they are all doing this now.

Considering how much time kids spend on social media, the significance of this is increasing. Cannot hurt recruiting.

Tennessee literally had a coach hired, and then backtracked because of social media. That is the bar.

When did anybody EVER think this? Have your forgotten they’re two Horrible programs? I think they hired coaches who will both A) be better than the previous coach and B) be popular with the fans and thus create more money for the university. Did you think one would hire Saban or something?

Given the influence of social media, seems like anyone making a big hire like this should run these numbers. Don’t see that it should be a huge factor but no reason not to estimate what the reaction will be so that you’ll be prepared to capitalize and/or deal with the blowback. Sign of the times. Arguably an unfortunate one but a part of the world we live in.
