The realities of modern sports is that fan support of the coach from day 1 is vital.
Look at Joe Moorehead. A coach who lacks initial support and buzz has to wildly overperform season 1 to build any momentum. Leach could have the exact same results as Moorehead in his first 2 seasons and the fans will love him and be optimistic for year 3.
Yes, you need long term sustainability, as opposed to only winning the press conference, but these days the only way to get past the first few rough seasons to build a long term program is to win the press conference. You start off with a lot longer leash if you do.
