I was about to come start this thread.

It's not too odd considering the following:

7 days ago Riley said he was heading back to Corvallis and said he was open to coaching.

LINK
quote:

Former Nebraska coach Mike Riley was packing Wednesday when he got the call from a former walk-on quarterback he had landed in his first stint as Oregon State’s head coach.

Jonathan Smith had just become the Beavers’ head coach, and he wanted Riley to know. Smith, previously Washington’s offensive coordinator, called Riley weeks ago when he was interviewed for the job by the search committee, and Riley said Wednesday night he was “thrilled” the job went to Smith.

Does Riley want a job inside Smith’s administration? After all, Riley’s moving back to Corvallis to be a “full-time granddaddy.” He, wife Dee and their kids will have a full family Christmas at their old home.

“Jonathan needs to enjoy being named head coach,” Riley said. “If there’s a fit somewhere — coach or consult — yeah, that’d be awesome. But it has to be the right fit for him.”

Riley was never fired by Oregon State (he left for Nebraska before it came to that) and it's really Jonathan Smith's call.

Unusual for sure but so long as everyone is happy, cool.

Happy to have Riley's services again in Corvallis.

Left OSU twice and sucked at both new jobs, maybe he'll learn this time.

That's got to be a strange feeling for him. Had he stayed there, I'm sure he'd still be the head coach. Now he's returning as an assistant. It probably took him keeping his pride in check, which is respectable, bc I don't think I could do what he's doing.

Mike Riley is the son of a former OSU coach. Moved there at age 12 and is a Corvallis H.S. graduate.

I agree. It takes a lot of humility to do that. Or alternatively, coaching Football is more important to him than getting high positions of authority. I hope it's the latter, as the implication would be: the man is getting paid to do what he loves doing.

If Bobby Petrino can show his face in Louisville, KY without being tarred, feathered, drawn & quartered, then no coach returning to old stomping grounds will surprise me. Hell, UTk people were so desperate for a HC they were calling FOR Lane Kiffin. Think about what a study in Stockholm Syndrome that is.

The $6,630,000 he'll be getting not to coach Nebraska probably helps him stay humble.

So if the HC is just terrible, they can quickly promote him up to HC again.

I'm still trying to figure out what his role will be. They already hired an OC. They announced Riley as an Assistant Head Coach. Has there every been anyone with the title Assistant Head Coach that wasn't responsible for some sort of position group or an OC or DC?

It's similar to Dennis Erickson being the running back coach at Utah.

Yeah, he's one of the green types. Don't even think he owns a vehicle.

Dood is out there.

I still can't fathom that Mike Riley turned down the Bama job before we hired Franchione. That really does blow mind. Well I wish Riley and Dee the best at Oregon St anyway. He did wear that Crimson jersey nonetheless.

"My wife and I went to San Diego with a mutual agreement that our kids were going to finish school there," said Riley

So he could taken Bama's offer, but his family wasn't coming until the kids were done with high school.

I read another article that said Riley would make a point when his kids were growing up to come home each night to spend an hour with each kid. Reading to them, talking to them, doing whatever but giving them an hour with their dad each night. Then he'd head back to the office.

I understand family is a lot of the reason he is heading back to Corvallis. It's why he went to Bama to play for Bear Bryant (Riley's dad was from Alabama).

In the end, it was best for Bama and for Oregon State that things worked out the way they did. Bama eventually got Saban and Oregon State got their winningest coach in their dumpster fire of a history. Incidentally, Riley took Saban to overtime in '04.

My favorite memory of Riley was the '08 game against #1 USC on a Thursday night in Corvallis. It was a hard fought game with great defense and what a show by the Rodgers brothers. The crowd noise was unreal for such a relatively small venue. Felt like a SEC game.
