this I'm not sure I buy, like I said this is very risky and could blow up in your face. It very possible, ESPN was just jumping to conclusions, like alot of posters on here.
sure but the gist of it is, the Michigan source that Herbie talked to obviously wasnt representing Michigan's interests at all. The source herbie used was simply representing themselves and their OWN interests and herbie went with it because he trusted them.
Keep in mind that supposedly the official request to the Cincy AD to interview Brian Kelly came from Lloyd Carr himself representing UM. It is not too far out of the realm to imagine someone saying they are representing UM but actually representing Carr (or carr himself) spoke to Herbie and torpedoed Miles to UM before the official interview. If Miles officially talked to Martin et al in an interview they may not have been able to stop it, if they torpedo the Miles process BEFORE the official interview then they could exert some actual control.

My contention is Miles was candidate A#1 at Michigan until Herbie on Gameday this AM. Miles realized that the people on his side at UM were NOT in control and he knows what he had agreed to in principle with LSU was better than anything he would ever get at UM and he cut bait and ended it all.
On ESPN they replayed his postgame PC comments and he is clearly at LSU for the long haul.
First, note that I haven't heard the postgame.
I agree with all of what you've said except for the implicit assumption that Michigan couldn't mea culpa their way out of it if they so desired. Absent the MNC game, I think they could. Coaches say a lot of things in the course of a job switch, so nothing surprises me anymore in that regard. If West Virginia or Missouri had won tonight, Michigan would have still had a shot if they'd wanted it badly enough.

I agree with that. If Michigan wanted back in on Miles, all they'd have to do is go public with it and sacrifice the leaker to the media gods.

LINK
so pick a name from carr's staff that Miles would have kept, that guy talks to herbie, says Miles is a done deal, Tenuta is coming and "I will be remaining on the Miles UM staff" and Herbie runs with it. Couple that with the fact that the UM staff will be paid this year no matter who the coach is because they have an 2008 contract in place (thanks to LLOYD CARR) and it is really isnt that much of a stretch if you really think about it

He knew he was coming to enemy territory. He feared that he would never be embraced by Carr and that he'd be fighting that the entire time he was here. Miles wanted to retain some of the Michigan assistants because he respects their ability. However, he feared that he could not. They were loyal to Carr and he feared divisions within the program before he even got started.

Miles was embarrassed by ESPN and Michigan today and he has a Top 4 CFB HC contract offer in his pocket. His UM HC prospects and considerations are OVER

All true. In order to get him, I always figured that one of the pot sweeteners would have to be a housecleaning of "Miles Haters".
That link makes it sound like the Michigan deal was JUST AS DONE AS THE LSU ONE IS RIGHT NOW. These things can turn on a dime. Or could have anyway.

sure and I am not disagreeing with you but if you had seen the postgame PC then you would know that Miles is LSU's coach - the end
like I said, I think he realizes that the people that matter to him and want him there dont have the stroke they thought they did.
On the flip side, if Bo was still alive and he had endorsed Miles then this is all a moot point. Bo dying last year before carr retired ended the Les Miles candidacy before it ever really officially started. Clearly with no Bo around, Lloyd Carr wins

They're saying on UM's Rivals site that Chris Landry was on the radio saying the folks who didn't want Les leaked the info to screw him

I suppose their could still be a power struggle at U-M. The boosters/alum that want him vs Carr's faction...but it is just nuts no matter how ya look at it. This is provided Carr's guys are guilty.
I dont fault Kirk....I think he was set up. I hope he doesnt get fired if it was a set up.
Over 30s yrs of being a Wolverine fan....never thought I would see this type of Mickey Mouse BS. What a day.
Dont know if I said gratz earlier with all this stuff going on but WTG :)

We may be in the NC.
Good luck with your coaching search.

Les Miles was completely open and honest at the postgame pc. he said that he loved Michigan and that it really saddens him to not go back there. he said that he still loves michigan and supports them and will wear the blue win they play ohio state. he then stated that one of these days, michigan would win that game (and laughed about it).
i think he showed everyone that he knows what he has here at LSU and isn't interested in screwing that up for what "may be a good thing" at Michigan. especially with all the politics going on. him cutting jokes about michigan losing to osu pretty much sealed the deal for me. he's staying here for a very long time. and after we beat OSU, it'll be for as long as he wants.

so imagine if you are someone VERY high up at Michigan that desperately does not want miles to be the next UM HC. what do you do to make certain that Miles isnt the UM HC?
Answer: you try to frick him and embarrass him on the day he plays for the SEC CG. How do you do it? You call someone who trusts you and will take what you say and run with it. Someone like the tOSU/ESPN Golden Boy Kirk Herbstreit.
So not only do you guarantee Miles wont be the next UM coach by creating a situation where you embarrass him on the biggest day of his coaching life and make him DENY UM, you get to embarrass herbstreit and ESPN in the process.
Somebody very high up at Michigan won the coaching search poker game today and had a double win (eliminating Miles once and for all and completely embarrassing Herbie) in the process.
This was exactly my take being at the game today and hearing the pregame presser. I my first thought was that the Lloyd Carr Faction in Ann Arbor was behind the Herbie leak. Wow, it's nice to know that Louisiana isn't always the Mecca of backroom politics.

I just think it is great that Herbie got pwned by someone at Michigan

First off...Supa, great post and it's along the lines of what some of us suspected could happen.
Wolverine, i don't know how it couldn't be Carr's guys. Is there someone else in the Mich family that is a Miles hater? Looks like some house cleaning is in order at UM but probably won't happen if it involves showing Carr the door.

all it would have taken was someone from Lloyd's staff that Miles was going to keep (allegedly) confirming to Herbstreit that he was going to be on the UM staff next year. keep in mind those guys owe lloyd Carr for the job they have and the extra contract year he got them so it isnt a stretch to think that one of them could have done the dirty work (like Debord, who is my guess as the likely culprit).

Herbie's source was desmond howard

Here's a question:
I know reporters have great alliegence to their sources. That they gotta keep them secret in order not to scare away future souces. That they will go to jail for them, etc.
But does all that still apply if you find out your source had totally frickin lied to you and made you look like a fool on national t.v.? Funny Herbie is not singing like a bird about who his source is.

i've been told that desmond howard is on UMs coach search committee. dont know if its true or not, but that seems like the perfect leak to me.
