Marcus Freeman would have taken DC position at LSU

Marcus Freeman appeared on the Colin Cowherd show and said that Brian Kelly asked him to be the DC at LSU, and was interested. Notre Dame immediately contacted him about being the Head Coach. Hope this squashes any notions about his coaches not wanting to come with him.

I hope he does well but right now it seems like a short sighted move for ND making him HC with a 29 year old OC.

But but he faked a southern accent and said “family” all weird!!

his quote on the show was when asked by Kelly to be his DC at LSU was "Yes, but I have to ask my wife"

I like Freeman. He’s a good dude, I really do hope success for him. Very bold move of ND regardless

Notre Dame made a reactionary hire in the hopes they'd make the playoffs. If they didn't hire Freeman, he'd likely be at LSU with Rees as well.

Also note that Marcus Freeman said last year that he had every intention of becoming a head coach one day. I don’t think he would have been a coordinator for much longer.

Freeman is going to recruit, and he’ll recruit atypical players that don’t generally have interest in ND. A lot of kids love him.

I read that Ohio State was going to offer him their DC job after that debacle vs Michigan.
If ND didn't pick Freeman they would have probably waited for Fickell.
If Fickell is the ND head coach then Freeman either stays at ND to be DC for his old buddy Fickell, or Freeman is the head coach at Cincinnati, or goes back home to Ohio State to be their DC.
I don't see a scenario where Freeman ended up at LSU regardless.

The scenario is simple... as long as he wasn't offered a HC position, he would have been the highest-paid DC in the nation at LSU.

As others have said, if ND didn't hire Freeman, they likely hire Fickell, and Freeman likely just goes to Cincinnati.

ND just lost their successful HC...with a chance to reach the playoffs...because their HC didn't feel he could ever get enough talent to ND necessary to beat the Alabama's, Georgia's, Clemson's of the world for a national championship.
Right now, ND looks like they will have one of their better recruiting classes in a while. Many are attributing that to Freeman. Whether that is true or not, who knows? But if your HC just left because he felt he could not get the players their then it makes sense to hire a guy you THINK can get those players to ND.
Best case scenario: Freeman recruits on part with Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, LSU, etc and overcomes the talent hurdle to win a NC.
Worst case scenario: It is somewhat of a Mike Archer type hire. Young coach with no HC experience and relatively little coaching experience overall who the players really like, but who is unable to guide the talent to wins.

meh they wanted to continue on with what Kelly built and felt good about Freeman being the future star many believe he is.

Listening to the ND reporter from The Athletic, it sounded like Freeman and Rees were a package deal. Marcus freeman wouldn’t have been the head coach if Tommy Rees didn’t stay with him. If ND didn’t give Freeman the head job him and Tommy Rees would be in Baton Rouge as we speak.

Yep, or Ohio State would have matched the LSU offer to be their DC.
My point was that I don't think LSU/Kelly dropped the ball on Freeman, there were just too many options up north to bring him to LSU (and he clearly prefers to stay north or he wouldn't have picked ND over LSU a year ago)

Or he chose ND last year because the writing was very much on the wall. I’d rather be attached to Brian Kelly instead of O who was very much on the hot seat.

ND was stuck I think. Freeman had the leverage with ND being in playoff contention.
The ire would've turned to the ND administration had they allowed Freeman and Rees to leave as well. Like what's going on with you guys that everyone wants to leave?

I don't and it's not personal. I've always hated Notre Dame.

Freeman may put a dent into Ohio State recruiting.
Freeman is from Ohio, played for Ohio State, coached at OSU and Cincy his entire life sans his 1 year at ND.
