Like Mullen's gig at MSU, a low pressure first HC assignment for millions. What's not to like? If he gets them to a bowl, he's a miracle worker. If he flops, well, it was Vandy where no one is expected to succeed.
MSU is a MUCH better job than Vandy. Even Croom had a pretty good year at MSU once.

no one expects him to succeed. that is the point. if he fails, he has lost nothing but gained valuable HC experience and a fat pay check.

yep, he's still a very hot commodity at OC if he fails.

Excellent hire for Vandy. Nice to see the Dores trying to be competitive in the SEC east. If anything, at least we won't have to see Malzahn every year. It will be scary if Malzahn can make Vanderbilt a Top-10 offensive team.

Gosh damn, you're right. Oh well. That whole area is gorgeous in my opinion.

Here's the beauty of the whole thing for gus, he doesn't even have to get them to bowl status. If he strings together a couple of back to back 5 win seasons, gets a couple of SEC wins, and moral victories in the next two or three years; he will parlay that into a bigger job which is similar to his current boss.

can you form a RATT Squad for the Coaching Changes Board. Like a CCATT SQUAD TEAM.

You said two or three, not one.

Not necessarily. Take Ed O for instance, he had a disaster of a tenure at Ole Miss and that's probably going to prevent him from ever getting a HC job anywhere decent. With that said it's highly unlikely Gus is as bad as O even if he's at Vandy.

This was a great hire by Vanderbilt, imho

I would like to think that some of these guys have aspirations to eventually be given the reigns to a top notch program and be the head coach of a national championship team, and that it isn't just about the money.
But maybe I'm naive.

Will he coach the bowl game?
He will need to get to Vandy right away so he can focus on putting together a top notch recruiting class...

If he turns out to be a total moran like Ed O then he would have been fired from whatever "bigger" job he held out for and his stock would be just as damaged. If he totally flops then he still goes back to being an OC, but with a lot more money.
It isn't like some big program is going to pay him 4 million per year with no head coaching experience. It sounds like he would make comparable money at Vandy that he would make at a bigger name program, except he won't have the cut throat expectations.

This will be very interesting.

ed o proved he didn't have the organizational skills to be a head coach
and he can't go back to being a coordinator, b/c he never was one and never showed he could coordinate a defense

If Dinardo can get to LSU through Vandy, Malzahn can do a lot better.

This thing is not a done deal just yet.
Let's just hold the phone.
