AUBURN, Alabama – Though no agreement has been finalized and changes remain possible, Gus Malzahn is on the verge of accepting a reduced buyout and other limitations to remain for his seventh season as Auburn’s head football coach, sources told AuburnUndercover.

Malzahn’s buyout, sources said, would be reduced by an unspecified amount. Any coaching staff moves would have to be revenue neutral, effectively removing the possibility of paying buyouts for assistant coaches and assuring Chip Lindsey would remain as offensive coordinator unless he chooses to leave.

Lol at Gus. That’s flat out dumb. Making it easier and cheaper to fire him later. Take your full buyout and run Gus.

Why doesn’t he just work out a deal and leave ? Auburn pays the difference in any salary. Guess the issue is go where ? Texas tech and Louisville

You don't think AU could come up with $16 million in a month? We aren't LSU.

I can't believe that is accurate. That has to be floated out there by a pissed-off booster to generate support to fire Gus when it invariably comes out that Gus isn't going to accept a reduced buy out.

WHY would he unilaterally reduce his contract? Either he remains the coach of AU under the terms AU agreed to last year OR AU can fire him if they don't like it and pay the man what he is owed. Agreeing to reduce his contact is essentially an acknowledgement that your employer is doing everything they can to fire you and will do so as soon as reasonably feasible

Gus holds all the cards here. Auburn's money people are mad because they were leveraged into a "no win" situation last season. Gus beat Alabama and was a win away from the CFP. Even though they may have wanted to, AU couldn't fire Gus after that season. However, Gus had the open Arkansas job to leverage AU into a big contract.

If I'm Gus' agent this is very simple. Tell AU that if they want to fire my client, then fire him...but pay him every dime he's contractually owed. Otherwise, shut the frick up and live with the contract YOU agreed to.

So much so that he's willing to accept terms for the SOLE purpose of making it easier to fire him ASAP?

This isn't a situation where they are saying "Gus. We could really use the extra money to go out and get you more resources."

This is a "We really want to fire you as soon as we can, but it's too financially burdensome to do so right now. Can you go ahead and make that easier for us? K Thanx."

This doesn't make sense to me from AU's perspective. This seems like they are hamstringing themselves from possibly hiring better assistant coaches/coordinators, right?

They obviously don't want Gus to succeed at this point; they just want to make getting rid of him more defensible and cheaper next year.

AU is a dumpster fire.

i doubt this move would allow them to fire him before next year, so they'd basically be throwing away 2019 if this was the plan. pretty sure this is a "i'll reduce if you give me one more year" scenario

He's made over $30M as Auburn's head coach. Don't think he's hurting for money.

I'm kind now thinking this is a possibility. Float this story so even more people get mad about Gus being retained.

This Josh Moon stuff came out at around the same time yesterday.

Why should he bend over to make it easier for Auburn to fire hire him?

This makes a lot of sense, really. It is not unlike a star QB in the NFL re-structuring his contract to free up money for a needed free agent. Gus needs Cam 2.0, and you can't get a Heisman winner for $200,000 anymore.
