was offered the job per their AU insider source and that Oregon matched their offer. Which is probably what Cristobal wanted was to stay at the O

anyway I am shocked an AU insider would admit this, knowing that whoever they hire, is going to say I was not your number one choice.

But they may have leaked this so their boosters would know Steele was not number one but will be the fall back guy. Which tells me they will probably go after 2 and 3 before going to Steele. And Steele may know this and may be happy.

my doctor visit yesterday was with a big time AU donor and he said he is hearing Freeze is still the man. And he will be dejected to know it could be Steele

I'd be sick to my stomach I were an Auburn fan. They will settle for a soon to be 63 year old with a God awful record as a HC.

Steele wouldn't last 2 years at Auburn and could cause more harm in those two years that would take half a decade to fix

Cristobal isn’t worth offering a big contract to. And who cares if someone knows they offered someone else? Rich Rod hurt Saban’s feelings?

Auburn shouldn’t have fired Malzhan. He has beaten their arch rival more than any other team. Auburn consistently wins 8-10 games per season. Malzhan needed to do a better job of recruiting to his system. If Auburn doesn’t get a slam dunk hire, then they will have serious regrets.

Rich Rod was a different story as no one hid that he was number one and left to go home and pack then backed out. I dont think you want it out in public that Crisobal was offered the job and had a contract amount. Not a good image for anyone being looked at. Especially if the next guy gets a contract of lesser value. U lose your negotiating strategy. My point was not necessarily it was a certain coach but you release the deal u made to him. and lettting his name be public is not good for both sides. O fans will be made that he was evening talking to AU

If they end up with Steele, firing Malzahn was a mistake.

I have to believe they thought Mario was a sure thing when they pulled the trigger on Malzahn and that buyout. Can’t imagine they did that so quickly without thinking the next guy was lined up. Obviously it fell apart and now they might end up with Steele which is so amazing.

Rich Rod was pushed out when Saban agreed to go to Alabama. Which for Alabama was the right move, but let's not pretend that Alabama was the injured party here.

Anyone who has paid attention would know that though. Auburn fires Gus and the next day MC reminds the Oregon admins that they were working in a contract extension before covid shut down their budget. Two days later, he has an extension in front of him. Not like it was some big secret what happened.

AU's misstep here was not firing Malzahn, it was offering him that extension with that buyout in the first place.

It's not a bad look to fire him right now, but it is to pay the $21M to do it and now your target has said no thanks.

Napier would be my go to at this point.

Napier is my go to over Cristolballs anyway. He's also a great recruiter, but he's a better gameday coach.

99% of people said this about Orgeron and Les.

Les and Malzahn have a lot of similarities actually as far as success goes and how the fan base feels about them.

I still feel like Steele is being leaked by AU "sources" in order to make whoever they end up hiring seem like a good hire as opposed to the worst case of promoting Steele. If Steele was who AU wanted, they would have immediately announced the succession upon firing Malzahn so that Steele could keep the recruiting class together before signing day.

When it is all said and done, I think AU finds a way to hire Hugh Freeze. And any fans who initially said they didn't want him will overlook the NCAA/ethical issues because he will seem like such a home run after mentally already being prepared for Steele.

Freeze has never even been considered by the Auburn power brokers.

There is no way Freeze's name isn't being considered unless Freeze has already said no. This is a University that was willing to risk major NCAA issues to hire Pearl to elevate a bottom-tier basketball team. You don't think they would hire Freeze to bring back their football team? He is the only proven premier name available and if there is ever a university willing to overlook a few ethical concerns, it is Auburn or Louisville.
