i see him much like les miles, he did great with the team he came into, but then was just average after that. at least with les he recruited so well the talent often overcame his shortcomings as a coach and often won in spite of his poor game day decisions and lack of coaching quite often.

not to say he isnt a good coach, just that he "may" not be a guy to come in and right away make your team a playoff contender but he can give you winning records every year and thats what they need right now.

not all coaches are great recruiters and not all great recruiters are great coaches (miles) so its hard to get both in one package and sometimes teams need to accept reality they arent going to hire themselves into a national championship.

i see UT as a dumpster fire and right now they need stability and sumlin can be a good to above average coach right away and with the right recruits compete again for SEC CG

Why have an AD? Just hire your next coach based on internet polls.

I would say he did over his 2 predecessors Much better overal and

Dennis Franchione 5 years
0-3 in bowls
Never Ranked
2 losing seasons
Overall - 32–28
Big12 - 19–21

Mike Sherman 4 years
1-2 in bowls
Ranked 1 year Coaches-21 AP-19
2 losing seasons
Overall - 25–25
Big12 - 15–18

Kevin Sumlin 6 year(in the toughest division of the toughest conference most of those years)
3-2 in bowls and team likely goes to a bowl this year
Ranked twice Coaches-5 & 18 AP-5 & 18
6 Winning seasons
Overall - 51–26
SEC - 25–23

He was clearly trending down, however.

He would probably do better in the east and at least no where to go but up for Tenn.

Florida just hired a guy that went 14-11 in the last two seasons. Sumlin went 15-10.

I think Sumlin would kill it at UT. He could hit the ground running there. He can recruit and knows the SEC landscape well. If UT can show some patience, maybe 3 yrs to build up that roster again, Sumlin will have them competing for the East.JMO

He is going to the East and their previous coach was Butch Jones. Sumlin is a massive upgrade.

Mike Sherman was 0-2 on bowls. He was fired before the Northwestern game.

But, he tied for the Big 12 South title in 2010.

I'd rather have Miles coach my team than KS.

At least LSU was a tough and physical football team.

Did not realize that.

Technically but OU actually played in the conference championship game. It was also his only winning season there, 2 losing and one .500 season.

If you take out the Manziel years and only look at the last four years he's 15-17 in conference.

2014 - 5-0 (2-0) start = 3-5 (1-5) finish
2015 - 5-0 (2-0) start = 3-5 (2-4) finish
2016 - 6-0 (4-0) start = 2-5 (0-4) finish
2017 - 4-1 (2-0) start = 4-3 (2-4) finish

Most of those years A&M was probably the worst team in the SEC by the end of the year.

I've heard Sumlin and Butch are friends, but idk to what degree. Probably enough for Kevin to ask him about the AD, admin & boosters environment there.
