Tee Martin won a NC.

That's the other thing that worries me a little. People say he hasn't had talent since the the NC years. If that's so, who is to blame? Does he have no part in recruiting or closing the deal on these defensive players and if he does, is he just not recruiting good defensive players?

IMHO, I think Chavis is the safest hire, but not the best. I find a lot of fault in the Tenn team and the Third and Chavis stuff. That being said, he's better than what we had and I will support him, I'm just a little ho-hum over his hiring.

Will Chavis bring Caldwell or Brooks with him to LSU?

No talent at all. Will Overstreet, Haynesworth, John Henderson, Kevin Burnett, Jarod Mayo, Eric Berry etc etc. No talent. It was a miracle he produced those 50th and 70th ranked defenses year after year.

I didn't. Please elaborate, CountryVolFan. Your info would be greatly appreciated, by me at least.

The Defense was horrid against UF and Bama in '07 (and Cal too).

The Defense played really well against UF in '05, and '08, and not bad in '06.

'05 would have been a UT win if we score at all (16-9)...

We actually had a big INT for a TD called back in the 3rd quarter of the '06 game because a DL "hit" Chris Leak's helmet, causing his head to move not one cm. Had it not been called back, we are up by 2 scores, and UF doesn't win that National Title.

This year Brandon James scored a punt return TD against use for the 3rd straight season, '06, '07, '08. UF also had long TD drives covering 44 and 47 yards following terrible kick coverage. 2 of their 3 field goals came on drives following turnovers.

UF had under 250 total yards in both the '05 and '08 games.

The Defense played well against Bama this season until the 4th quarter when they ran the ball pretty much every play. At that point they were worn out.

What's your point? Am I wrong about the losses and points scored? Do you think Chavis has Meyer, SOS and Petino figured out?

He's done well against Spurrier for a while now... and did well against Meyer aside from '07. He's never faced Petrino, so I couldn't tell you on him.

His press conferences notwithstanding, the HC is not approaching 70.

If he is here for another 15 years he will be. This was in response to someone saying they want Miles, Chavis and Crowton here for another 15 years.

"true, meyer did lose four last year with a heisman trophy qb. Wander how he would have did w/o tim tebow?

s.e.c. and pac 10 are quite different.

saban lost 6 last year, and 5 in 2002. He is/was great, fan's think he's a great coach. he even lost three games in 2004. so, miles is a dumbass because of this year but these other coaches are great.

Not saying miles is the greatest coach ever, it just doesn't matter who he hires, how much he wins, or how well he recruits. It will never be enough.

We got guys upset about chavis because going 10-2 will not be good enough.

somewhere out there, there must be a d.c. good enough to insure we will not lose a game?

this stuff gets old. We are exactly two plays from being 9 and 3 even with the qb and defensive play we had. If we improve in both area's, why can't we turn 2 or 3 l's into w's?

I love we almost lost or may lose games comments. People say we were a few plays from losing 4 or 5 last year. Why weren't we two plays away from being undefeated last year?"

Hold on! We have an intelligent poster! Thank you for your sense and sensibility. You forgot to add, that if we lost one of our close four games from last year we would not have a NC!

Wow! I hope we have a few more years with close games, two loses, and a NC.

Chavez is a good hire. He'll open up Latin American recruiting.

O and Joseph would be great. Chavis is meh. You know we won't be terrible, you know we won't be great either. Fits with Miles' scheme of losing at least 2 games every year no matter how talented you are.

Whheeeeww! For a while there I thought you were talking about the season's that are typical of $aban since he's been a head coach.....relatively speaking. Oh wait, $aban historically averages at least 3-4 loses a season no matter how talented his teams were/are.

its well known that fulmer mailed it in on the recruiting trail long ago. the fact that chavis had the #4 ranked defense last year is pretty good i'd say. and it is definitely an improvement over what we had. maybe not the best dc in the world but definitely an improvement.

Of course not. You seem to look at everything as an absolute. Miles doesn't make poor DC choices, he's retarded. People aren't optimistic about Chavis, they're sycophants who answer everything with "FEARDAHAT DAMNSTRONG WOOT!"

Don't misinterpret this as an attack - society in general is starting to describe everthing as the Greatest Ever, or Absolutely Horrible with no degrees in between. But that doesn't make it any less intellectually lazy to look at things that way.

Your beef is that TN's defenses have been "mediocre" 3 of the last 4 years. Is it your position that the loss of a DT so talented he was taken in the 1st round despite playing 3 games his Sr. year had ZERO effect on TN's ability to stop the run? Or that having, say, 8 new starters in another year also did not affect TN's defensive ranking in any material way? That the ONLY explanation for these rankings is that Chavis sucks?

Or, is it more likely that these things added, say, 50-60 ypg total to TN's defensive stats? That's about an extra drive per game. But think about that for 2 seconds - defense on the field that much longer, playing from behind more, extra guy in the box to stop the run denies the ability for safeties to help over the top, etc. It doesn't take much at this level.

I get the feeling that, like Groucho Marx who wouldn't join a club that would admit him as a member, you'd hate any DC Miles hired simply because it was Miles who hired him. And that's fine. But that doesn't excuse your refusal to acknowledge the potential reasons underlying the stats you keep quoting as evidence against Chavis.
