They will never be Saban, always compared to him, and never lauded for any accomplishments.
Those that were here after 82, and Bear leaving know what I’m talking about.

No one is Saban. Without Saban, they lose just a little bit of that mystique,. They’re still a top-tier progtsm until proven otherwise. But they’re vulnerable, too.

Just a statue if you win a championship. Nothing crazy though

Eta oh, and this is the stupidest thing over seen. Nobody is going to recreate saban. Every person I’ve talked to knows that. But it does actually matter who Alabama hires. If they hire a good coach things will be just fine. This isn’t the fricking 80’s

It seems like everybody expects Alabama fans to expect the same from the next guy, yet every Alabama fan I know doesn’t think that. Weird

Bryant hand picked Ray Perkins and the bama fans thought a coach from the giants who played for bear would continue to dominate, he went 32 - 15 - 1 from 83 through 86 and bailed out, going to be a great amount of pressure on the next guy.

I feel sorry for whoever takes that job. They will NEVER meet the fanbase’s expectations. Saban set that bar impossibly high.

Prior to Saban, Bama had won 2 titles in 30 years. I think that’s what they will return too. Auburn is no doubt rejoicing tonight more than anyone.

Since he has 3 titles himself, I think Urban Meyer is the only one who could realistically get close.

Everybody involved with Alabama, from the President and BoS, to the tree poisoners and the spouse killers, insisted they hire somebody with ties to the Bear. And with the exception of Stallings, they made stinky hire after stinky hire. Saban was the trend-breaker, 25 years later. It’ll be interesting to see if they insist on someone with Saban ties this time.

Having Kelly now is valuable. Building stability back into the program. Getting some defensive help on staff. Need the horses and it’s our time with him out of the way.

You are correct. But that’s going to be the expectations on the next coach. Pretty much impossible for whomever is next.

Someone refresh my memory. Who followed Bear Bryant and how did he do?

I know that’s rhetorical, but let’s answer it anyway

1983 - 8-4
1984 - 5-6
1985 - 9-2-1
1986 - 10-3

Record at Alabama was 32-15-1

Then took the job in Tampa Bay and never won more than 5 games in a season.

Saban was starting to not meet the fan’s expectations (and he’s the one that set them)
