Is there an example of an avg HC with great OC/DC doing well?

People keep saying to hire Coach O and just get a great OC to go with Aranda and we'll be fine.
Really?
Could you give an example of that ever working?
Tommy Tuberville is all I can think of when he would get great coordinator hires. Then, they would leave and he'd struggle again. Very inconsistent.
When else did this work?

DABO !!
He was the WR's coach with NO prior HC experience.
That's why people are ok with CEO as LSU's head football coach

Miles had Jimbo and Peveto. Not sure if Miles is avg or slightly below avg.

I don't get how this answers OP's question. Dabo went from position coach to HC, but he has been an above average HC. I don't believe the ONLY reason Dabo is a successful HC is because of his coordinators.

You can't compare these situations really. Dabo wasnt a previously failed HC and DC when promoted to interim HC. So if that's their reasoning then it's flawed logic. Dabo is also an exception to the rule of hiring an interim HC to perm and them finding the success like LSU will demand of their new HC. Usually they aren't hired at all or they fizzle out quickly.

Jason Garrett
Larry Smith at Arizona, USC, and Mizzou.
Rich Rod? Since he has left WVU really what has he done to make you think he was above average?
Tommy Bowden at Tulane and somewhat at Climpzin
Sumlin with Dana, Kilff, the Chief
So yeah I think there are some examples.

Miles did better than all of those guys for a much longer period of time.

This is the correct answer.
A great coach is a great coach. Their influence and effect is visible. Players play hard all game long. They don't make stupid mistakes. They remain poised and calm in high pressure situations.
Now, if a man chooses to focus on leadership as opposed to tactics, that's fine. Bobby Bowden became a 'big picture' guy towards the end of his run.

While Bowden was very average as far as X's and O's go, he was a very good game manager, had a great sense of timing and when to call "that play" they had been saving to bust a game open.

The head coach should bring a specialty to the table. Saban is responsible for the defense at Bama, not the DC.
When Aranda gets a head job, it will be his defense. Saban is happy hiring a specialist in for the offense.
