Also, didn't he coach a few huge names that came out of Kentucky? I forgot who they were

Not out of Kentucky but he was credited for developing Aaron Donald at Pitt.

I'm not 100% sure about his defensive scheme but I thought it was a multiples approach not solely a 3-4 or 4-3.

Not sure but people put way too much on that. They both equal 11, good players make both successful, it really doesn’t matter. There’s been plenty of shitty 3-4 Ds.

Which one is the Joe Brady defense?

Pretty sure Josh Allen had one of the best defensive seasons in SEC history under him.

His defense is based on personnel. He'll run what's our strength.

Probably should have phrased my post better. I meant Donald wasn't out of Kentucky. Not that he didn't coach any good players at Kentucky.

We need to stop with the 3-4 vs. 4-3 thing.

Virtually every defense in college football now uses three down linemen and a stand-up rush end. Is that a 3-4 or a 4-3? It's a totally semantic argument.

That would be a 3-4

Try telling Ed Orgeron that.

Can’t be a 4-3, that was what killed our defense, allegedly.

Mmm, I’m not sure it’s just semantics when you’re recruiting. Especially when it comes to DL. You’ve got to convince the Mason Smith’s of the world that while he won’t rack up the stats as a 3-4 DE that he might as a 4-3 DT, that versatility will make him a shite ton of money in the NFL. And 3-4 noses are harder to find—specially in LA—than 4-3 DTs. I think you have to be able to run a 3-4 and 4-3–be multiple—to stop all the teams on the schedule. But I do think you need a good communicator of the long-term benefits of the 3-4 to more easily recruit DL.

You can blur these lines even further when you start talking about a 1 gap 2-4 vs a 2 gap. A 1 gap scheme doesn’t depend on having a space eater who can take on 2 blocks at DT. That’s what we ran often early in Aranda’s tenure as we transitioned to the new scheme.

A guy like Smith may not be as limited playing DE in a 1 gap scheme, especially playing opposite of the rush LB/DE. This works much more like a traditional 4-3 and would make it easier to be multiple in alignment.

Agreed, but you need a guy who can sell that. Hopefully House can, and it’s no big deal. I do think it was easier to recruit LBers under Aranda than it was DL. Maybe that was on O, though.

Don't really care and would prefer if he's a multiple kinda guy to fit what we're working with.

As long as public opinion doesn't sway him like it did with ed, we'll be fine.

Didn't we have a guy like that? He was pretty good. Think he is a head coach in Texas somewhere.
