I am not saying Stricklin will frick it up but the only major hire he made for us was Rick Ray. It was a not well kept secret that other people took control for the Howland hire. Did a fantastic job with marketing and the minor sports though.

This. He has come out multiple time and dispelled rumors.
UAA had leaked Tagg and Frost rumors.
They got a gag order. More rumors on this than anything and no UAA response nor one from Sticklin. None of the Gator insiders on the sites can get their sources information outside of two, and it is the same so far from Tilly and AKOW.

I watched the press conference when Mac was fired. If I remember correctly, Stricklin said he wouldn't comment on rumors or confirm/deny any until the search was finished. So, I doubt he would single out this one rumor to deny it.

This one has gotten so big that he almost has to if it is not true. Everyone's attention is now on Kelly, and pretty much anyone else at this point is going to be considered a disappointment by some.

Kelly, on the other hand, has no benefit from letting the rumors run rampant and has shot them down in the past immediately. This time he is eerily silent, and it's obvious that they are at the very least talking to each other about the possibilities, at the most working over the contract.

What other schools are available?
He's not going to Tenn. I can only see a handful of programs he'd go to.
If he's going back to college, he won't want a recruiting challenge. He wants kids in his back yard.
