The only way Freeman stays at Cincy is if Fickell leaves for a HC job which it seems won’t happen this year so it’s us or ND. Money equal he stays close to home at ND but if we offer $300K-$700K more per season than ND then maybe money wins out but we will have to offer a meaningful amount more to uproot his family. He can conceivably not even have to move his family if he didn’t want to by taking the ND job. He’s only a 3 1/2 hour drive away. That means he could stay in South Bend but still have time to drive home often. Wherever he goes he won’t be there more than 2 seasons. If Fickell leaves Cincy next year he will take that job and be one and done as a DC.

Not relocating his family and working relationship with HC are big reasons to stay.

That being said there is no reason to put himself on the market if he wanted to stay. Unless he is just getting leverage and Cincinnati pays up or he bounces.

Cincinnati wouldn’t even try to negotiate with Freeman against LSU and ND. They know that’s a losing fight. The HC job is their only bargaining chip and it’s not available.

Given what we saw from LSU’s defense last year, a decision to take our DC position would effectively be a decision by freeman to “bet on himself”. If he can turn things around, he could conceivably jump fickell in the rising-star coach rankings—but if he can’t, and he gets fired, it could completely tank his image and really torpedo his career before it gets off the ground.

The defensive performance was very poor, and I think there is reason to worry about the LB and Safety positions without knowing and working with the players who haven’t made an impact on the field yet. However, a good DC will see the young talent on the DL and that there are two difference makers at CB with a couple of guys who have potential behind them. Then you have a really solid incoming defensive class with a few instant impact players. You also have a defense that, if you look beyond the poor overall pass coverage, did prove it can get pressure on the QB and create turnovers. In the right hands, that’s a setup for a big turnaround.

A good DC should be able to look at the misuse of the talent available and the burden that was placed on our two weakest positions and see that there is a much higher floor than what we got in 2020 in the right hands. There is risk, but not as much as you make it out to be. Just fielding an average to good defense in year one wins 2 or 3 games that we lost this year. Bo just did that poor of a job adjusting to what he had.

I would bet your house it’ll be $2.5 or little less. Maybe 2.3 like Pelini.

I really like my house, but I just did a cash out refi on it, so if you wanna take over the note, take the house, and let me keep the cash we could talk!lol

I posted this a few days ago which is just my 10000 ft observation.

I believe Fickell and Freeman are joined at the hip and both eventually want to end back up at tOSU. I believe Fickell told Freeman that he needs to broaden his resume and go get P5 level experience to improve his chances of achieving his goals of being a HC. I believe Fickell is on the short list for Buckeye HC if Ryan Day leaves and he wants Freeman to come with him back to the Mothership in the long run.
So it is best for Freeman and Fickell for MF to go get better experience and believe it or not LSU is a pretty safe place. The past history has been extraordinary and will have no problem with talent procurement. The Pelini term was an outlier. I suppose ND is a reasonably safe place to with a decent chance of success too but LSU's track record is pretty good.
And lastly, believe it or not, Orgeron is a good HC specimen to study if you are a student of such. He is a high energy recruiter, bonds well with players, has learned from past mistakes, and has some great contacts in the coaching tree he spawned from.

I love how you read your post and recognized the shitty grammar, but then added this sentence instead of fixing it.

Freeman is not going to stay at Cincinnati as a DC. That's not going to happen at this point. LSU is in competition for Freeman with Notre Dame, or if one or two dominoes falls and he gets an head coaching offer.

Well I hope you are right.

And could certainly strengthen MF’s concepts re: DL coaching.

If he's currently making 600k I think offering to quadruple that salary would be worth any risk. If he's confident in his ability he's going to land on his feet no matter what happens during his tenure at LSU.

$2.5 mil will secure a pretty good quality of life for him and his family no matter where they live. If not, their private jet can get them there on the weekend.

No, it is unreasonable

If LSU sucks next year, but Freeman does his job, his stock won’t be impacted at all.

I never said anything that contradicted this. I was very clear that if Freeman does a good job, LSU is absolutely the best place to advance his career. My point was simply that he is basically 100% safe if he sticks with Fickell. If he jumps to LSU and fails, he will be quickly let go. I'm NOT saying that he *will* fail--in fact, i'm quite optimistic that he will be great--I'm simply saying that if he does a shitty job at LSU, it will have far greater consequences for his career than if he were to stick with Fickell and do a shitty job.

I swear it's like you didn't even read my post. ALL I'm saying is that LSU is a higher-risk/higher-reward situation for him. If he does well at LSU it will be better for him than doing well with Fickell. If he does poorly at LSU, it will be worse for him than doing poorly with Fickell. That's damn near indisputable.

It would be insulting to offer him less than Pelini.

Hell its insulting to even offer him anything with the same first number as Poohlini...we signed BP to 2.3 to field LSU's worst ever D, and play a shite ton of golf...insert the rounders meme here...GDT's

Looking at their 24/7 board it seems they are semi confident in getting him back and think LSU is a risky move due to how bad our defense was last year.... lol
If the defense hadn't been that bad then LSU wouldn't be interviewing Freeman...

I doubt the offense will be terrible or that coach O is in any danger to lose his job next season, but you usually don’t put anyone with zero head coaching experience as the interim head coach but now that I have said that I don’t believe LSU has anyone on staff besides O that has head coaching experience.
