I'm not sold on Marcus Freeman - sell me on that idea

Cincinnati has had great defenses, but Fickell is a defensive coordinator and linebacker coach himself (Freeman's two jobs) and it is his system. It's like giving all the credit to Saban's DC for an Alabama defense.

Freeman might be great, but it's too much of an unknown in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Why does anybody have to sell you? Do more research and sell yourself

I did - it's a message board. Just trying to generate discussion because maybe I'm missing something that makes people on here really want him.

But thanks for your contribution!

That’s the biggest issue I’ve seen with some of the hires mentioned coaching under defensive coordinator head coaches. How much are they really doing and can they do it by themselves?

I’m not sure who are his sources, but Scott Long of Dandydon.com lists Freeman as one of the leading candidates.

Marcus Freeman was named to the University of Cincinnati football staff in January 2017. He is the DC and LB coach.

The Bearcats finished atop the 2019 AAC ranks in scoring defense for the second-straight season and ranked among the league's top three in rushing and total defense.

The 2018 Black Cats Defense led the American in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense and ranked among the Top-15 in the NCAA FBS in all three categories.

He joined the Bearcats staff after a four-year stint at Purdue. He coached linebackers all four seasons and served as the Boilermakers co-defensive coordinator in 2015.

Freeman turned Purdue's linebacking corps from one of the biggest questions marks to one of its strengths over the past four seasons.

Cincy Bio
PLAYING CAREER
2004-08: Ohio State (Linebacker)
2009: Chicago Bears (Linebacker); Buffalo Bills (Linebacker); Houston Texans (Linebacker)

COACHING CAREER
YEAR: SCHOOL - POSITION
2010: Ohio State - Graduate Assistant
2011-12: Kent State - Linebackers
2013-15: Purdue - Linebackers
2016: Purdue - Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers
2017-: Cincinnati - Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers

He's 34, has an NFL pedigree (player) and has ties to the Big 12 area we need to recruit.

I think he needs a hard look.

Agree he's worth a hard look.

But here is how Purdue did when he was promoted to Co-DC.

Prior to Co-DC (linebacker coach):

2014: PPG 99th, YPP 66th
2015: PPG 112th, YPP 104th

Freeman at Co-DC:

2016: PPG 116th, YPP 102nd

Even if it's not their defense HCs still need DCs who can run their schemes. Ask Saban. He's a HC and yes, it's Saban's defense but he has other responsibilities on the team too. See the guy at Bama right now? Have you noticed Bama's defenses have been worse? That's not a coincidence. They have to get DCs they can trust to run their scheme. I'd imagine Freeman isn't some bum if he's under Fickell with the gameplan, scheming, and calling in the defense.

It's definitely a risky hire but who isn't with the names that have been associated with LSU? None of the retread hires like Muschamp or Mason are "safe".

I'm not sure Freeman is interested in leaving. He turned down the Titans LB Coach position, he turned down an offer to be DC at Michigan State for Mel Tucker who was his DC at Ohio State. He says he wants to be a HC and believes Cincinnati is putting him on track to do that.

His website is a cancer to look at. He doesn't have any real sources besides boards.

Jeremy Pruit, Will Muschamp, Kirby Smart were all pretty damn good DCs under Saban and their defenses were sound wherever they went.
