Stoops is maneuvering behind the scenes to get his old job back?

I don’t think he wants the job. He is just glue for a month or so to try and keep the program from imploding. He loves OU and is simply trying to help where he can. I respect and admire him for that.

Bob said he doesn't want to coach to old age. But he also is stewarding the program and that is why he is being interim.

With that said, if his stewarding is really him trying to swing a big dick, then no I do not see Venables going back.

I mean he (Bob) did basically push him out to put his brother on staff while Venables was one of the top assistants in the country and a great recruiter.

Honestly they should do Stoops for 4-5 years to help them with the transition to SEC. Bob could really help with that transition.he would be able to sign any up and coming coordinator because their dream would be to take over once he retires again.

I think we all just kind of wanted it to be Venables and it was premature hope. Sources everywhere.

The candidates being talked about as of this morning are Rhule, Venables, and Lanning.

But like Woodward, OU's AD doesn't leak stuff so who knows.

May find something out today.

Bob doesn't want to coach full-time.

Jason Kersey just said it’s probably Venables and he expects Caleb to stay and more transfers

Venables might just be one of those guys who likes being a DC. I'm sure he has been offered some pretty good HC opportunities in the last few years, and he's still at Clemson.

Yeah the same thing every one said about Aranda.

He'd take the OU job if offered.

For a first time HC, they don't get much better than OU.

they are on good terms now. As in "family vacations together" good terms.

Venables would be such an underwhelming hire for OU. I don't see them hiring someone with zero Head Coaching experience, especially with the upcoming move to the SEC. They could get a much bigger fish.

There have been rumbles about some pretty awful off the field stuff with Venables for years. A DC with his resume should have been a HC years ago.

He says that, but boy does he somehow end up coaching a lot and doing a lot of football shite despite that

OU is in a tough spot right now. The easy answer is to try to tie this next hire back to the Stoops era. Stoops himself, Venables, Heupel, Mark Stoops ....

Look at USC's decade plus of failure trying to retain a glimmer of the Carroll years. Look at Tennessee re-engaging Philip Fulmer to find their way forward.

Sometimes you just take these moments as pivots for the future and charge ahead without looking back. Riley gutting the current staff could be a blessing in disguise. Clean house, bring in new blood, and move forward.

Their last two hires had no head coaching experience. Both worked out well.

I agree with this. My immediate gut feeling when that rumor came out was that it will not work out.
