I think Riley made a strategic mistake (non LSU)

He could have easily leveraged this talk into a huge extension and road his success into the SEC with what he already built. Why would he choose to move conferences and rebuild if he simply wasn’t buying time to get to the NFL (yeah I know, money)
Maybe he knew OU wouldn’t pay up? Or simply didn’t want to play in the SEC at all. Either way he got paid, it just doesn’t make sense. He had a young QB who could play and a solid class coming in.

It’s already been stated, it’s older news. Lincoln Riley was not in favor of the SEC move in the first place. He just put an exclamation On that thought

I think he was straight up scared of the SEC and knew he didn’t have what it takes.

he was smart enough to know he needed a real live defense to win 9+ wins a game a year in the SEC. Just like us, he saw what OK looked like vs SEC with his ok players.
This isn't the case at USC and Pac10, he made the right decision by a mile.
...I assume he also looked around and realized Oklahoma is bottom 3rd of SEC states for athletes. maybe 2 a year come from OK, its going to matter.

This is clearly the reason.
Reports are that he was mad OU didn't consult him on joining the SEC.

Yeah...about that...

his path to a title just got a lot easier out west

Riley made a great move…He can go out to USC, make multiple playoffs (much easier to do it at USC than a SEC school) so what if he gets pounded in playoffs….10 yrs from now he will be 48 yrs old and all the SEC schools looking for a coach will line up to try to get a coach who has multiple playoff appearances.

He gets 15 a year, USC purchased 2 houses for him one is 6 million mansion. He gets unlimited use of private jet. Doesn't have to do the SEC grind. He made the first choice.

Ya, everyone leaves off the lifestyle. He doesn't have to live in a small college town anymore. He gets the NFL lifestyle without the NFL job insecurities, etc.
That's on top of relieving the pressure from his job with the easier path. USC should win the Pac 12 South every year. Every year if run by someone with half a brain.

Idk, I think OU is going to have a harder go in the SEC than they think they will. 4 SEC schools recruiting TX hard is going to strain OU. They need a serious coach who can recruit, build up the trenches, oh and one who gives a shite about defense.

He should dominate the South but if Cristobal stays at Oregon he'll build a monster with that Nike money.

I disagree. If someone offers you 10 mil a year, buys your old houses for a million over asking, buys you a 6 mil house in So Cal, access to a private jet 24/7, I think that’s the job they dream of when they are someone’s grad asst at Directional State College during 2 a days in hot Summer heat.
People forget that at the end of the day, this is a job. A ridiculous job, yes. But if you’re going to have this opulence, why not in So Cal over Norman, Oklahoma? No, I think he made the only logical choice anyone could make.

Maybe he wants to build his own thing.

Probably got sick of making a minimum 8 hour round trip just to visit a recruit.

I disagree with this take. I think he made the right move for his coaching career. With the money and perks alone it was a good move.
-He will probably rule the pac-12, something he wouldn't have done in the SEC. He has Oregon & Utah to deal with and the is it. You win the pac-12 every other season and he is golden
-With so much money in California and NIL money, he will keep those offensive recruits in California. Kids will be wanting to go to California and tap into some of the NIL money and play for a team that will win the pac 12 and get into the CFP every other year.
-He made the right decision. Those west coast recruits will be staying on the west coast now with all the NIL money, good weather, lots to do, and a winning team.

So you're saying his job will be easier to achieve the same reward if he had stayed where he was or taken the LSU job. That's what everyone else is saying.

OP asked if he made a strategic mistake. I don't think he did.
But yes I concur with what most are saying about it being an easier path in the Pac-12. You start adding in big NILmoney, weather, things to do, etc and recruits will want to go there and Cali recruits will want to stay
