Matt Campbell is a better coach than Lincoln Riley in everything except recruiting.

We'll see about recruiting. It's a hell of a lot easier to recruit to OU than ISU.

I know Campbell likes and understands the importance of recruiting. He's high energy and connects well with recruits.

Have you?

I think he could lock down the state…especially with some assistants with local ties.

Correct. Riley is elite and more experienced at it, but it doesn't mean Campbell will lag behind forever (and he could end up great). A big unknown.

I'd be really happy if Campbell was announced today. He might not be the sexiest hire, but he checks a lot of boxes Woodward would go for.

Proven program builder.

Successful tenure at a P5 school.

Named as a top recruiter by 247 when he was still at Toledo.

Has been an OC, but was also an all-American defensive player, so knows both sides of the ball.

Only 41 years old, with a young family, and has already passed on NFL jobs before, so less likely to leave if he has success.

Good coach. Bad fit for strong SEC program. Just watch some of his press conferences / locker room speeches. Wouldn’t fly here.

He isn't cut out for the SEC. Couldn't believe his crazy mess saying you will never hear him saying a conference championship is one of his goals.

Could be tailoring his message for the program he's at.

LSU’s 2003 national championship team under Saban didn’t have wining the conference or national title as one of their goals.

LINK

It is more of reading between the lines. His entire coaching staff came with him from Toledo and this article talks about 5 star culture vs. 5 star type players. Campbell who is from Ohio and started in the MAC. I think he has only signed like 4 4-star players in his entire time. He has focused on building a development type program and winning with 3 stars etc, rather than bring in a staff to go around trying to chase 4 stars, etc.

So while my statement is not an exact quote, it does capture the type coach he is and how he runs his program at Iowa State.

Now with that said, I think the guy is a heck of game day coach and developer of talent. If he embraces the recruiting culture of the SEC and agrees to put in the yearly work that has to be done to recruit in this league, I think he can be a homerun hire.

He has shown he can compete against OU, Texas, etc, who do recruit 4 stars, etc.
