I don’t get the hate for Campbell.

Dude is a solid coach, young, and energetic.
A lot of head coaching experience.
He completely turned around Toledo and Iowa State into very respectable programs and had a lot of NFL interest.

I’ve always had him as a top tier hire. I’d certainly put him higher on my list than Napier or Aranda.

He’s every bit as exciting as Aranda or Napier.

He wears his hat dumb and couldn't get Manning to Ames.

He loses games he isn't supposed to lose. Ever year without fail. He's average in the grand scheme of things. A Mullen type.

I think he's a better candidate than Napier easily.

People thought we were getting Riley. You don't pick Campbell over Riley.

I'm betting they'd rather Campbell over Stoops or BOB though.

What games exactly are Iowa St not supposed to lose? It's Iowa St.

He’s coaching at Iowa State … he has NO room for error on any given Saturday.

Also, consistency in coaching success often comes with experience and age.
The ceiling is very high with him.

Iowa St is supposed to win the Big 12 with recruiting classes ranked in the 50s, didn't you know?

He has underachieved IMO with Brock Purdy as his QB.

The way I’m thinking, anybody with a little bit of competence can win here. I’d be fine with Campbell. Besides, I’m ready to see us hire somebody young.

He'd be fine. I just don't think it's particularly likely that a midwest guy is going to go to LSU when he has a pretty good gig that will let him wait out a top tier Big 10 opening. Same reason why I don't think Fickell is an option. People like Mario Cristobal who radically move from their "footprint" are rare.

He is, lots of NFL GMs think he is a legit NFL HC. However, he has said he doesn't like the recruiting game that you need to compete in the SEC with Bama, UGA, Florida, Texas A&M, etc.

No doubt he has recruited lots of 2 and 3 star guys at Iowa State and coached and developed them. That will not work in the SEC, you have to go out and recruit top notch personnel, because the other schools you play will do so, and then coach those guys up.

Which is great for a program looking to find its footing. Can he be more than that? Maybe, but it is pretty risky. And while ISU has been good the past few years, they've been good in a very weak conference and got to the title game once in 2020.

I wouldn't be terribly disappointed in Campbell like some, but there is a reason if he is the guy it better be at a massive bargain.

Matt Campbell is a better coach than Lincoln Riley in everything except recruiting.

(If you want to parse it finely, Lincoln is also a more proven QB developer, but it's still unknown what Campbell can do with that).

Have you been to Ames, Iowa? Have you tried to recruit to Ames, Iowa?
He will be able to recruit LSU.

Having spent more time analyzing his record, I'm concerned about his recruiting prowess. He might get devoured in the SEC by the tactics of his rivals.
