How Woodward operated w/Jimbo and A&M compared to Riley/OU (long)

As the clock ticks and smoke heats up on Riley with you guys, it’s hard to not see some clear similarities in the signals from both sides with when Woodward brought Jimbo over from FSU. I am not in any way trying to compare them as coaches, just the situations since both are high profile coaches with the same AD making the hire.
- Things heated up big time on our end a few weeks before Thanksgiving weekend, with most of our insiders reporting in early November he was target number one when Sumlin got canned. They also expressed confidence we would be able to get him. This conference was largely laughed at by FSU folks (sound familiar?) The most notable was Bud Elliott, who insisted Fisher was going nowhere and constantly offering to put money down that he was staying
- Confidence among those in the know (reporters and reputable message board posters) continued to grow over the next few weeks, and by the time this same weekend rolled around it was pretty much accepted among our folks Fisher was coming (FSU had another game left after UF because of a PPD hurricane game). FSU insiders continued to deny, and most considered us delusional (usually a fair opinion) and wondered what could offer Jimbo that they hadn’t (this is where I see a lot of similarities).
- Suddenly the week after UF, things heated to a fever pitch. It was suddenly obvious to all at this point Jimbo was gone (the ppd game and recruiting urgency had clearly fricked with Woodward’s timeline IMO). FSU folks started throwing mud at him (expect this with Riley), with Elliott reporting FSU players were going to transfer if he came back. Everyone remembers the Christmas tree in the garbage, and the Friday before their makeup game he was gone.
The clear difference between the situations is that Fisher had worn thin on some folks, he had been at FSU a while and was in the midst of a rough year. Riley has been at OU for less time and still has a lot to play for today and this year. I am interested to see how that impacts timing if OU wins tonight. But I can’t help but notice the similarities between OU and FSU - blindsided, dismissive, not understanding why, until suddenly it was happening and they hated the guy. I think it speaks to how well Woodward operates when pulling this type of hire off. And IMO I do think he is pulling it off for you guys.
Tl;dr - There are some obvious similarities in the smoke signals, especially coming from the school that is getting their coach took. Flame away, Jimbo sucks, Aggy is gay etc. Looking forward to a good one tonight and Riley is a hell of a hire, I would expect nothing less from Woodward

Man honestly all I remember was Randy McAvoy on Houston tv mentioning Jimbo in October of that year and weeks later had contract numbers down to the penny.

Compared to the previous search/regime if this sticks the landing is kind of amazing.

Yeah I forgot he was on top of it as well. And he rarely breaks stuff (especially about A&M, usually it’s Brent Z). I’m sure there’s details I’ve forgotten

Woody is probably the best AD in the game

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Woody is obviously a great salesman
If his football hires are..
Petersen
Jimbo
Riley
The guy may be a legend.

Woodward is a boss and I felt much better about a future coaching search the moment he was hired. Hopefully he’s the one making those decisions for many years to come.

Oh, he’s had plenty of typical Aggie a-hole moments just like the rest of them around here, but this post is a solid breakdown. It’s worth an upvote.

One thing I wanted to expand on with this: I saw one of the posts that was copied from an OU 247 mod about Riley wanting “assurances on OU’s commitment to the football program” or something along those lines. We saw similar from FSU when the smoke really started to get heavy that he was leaving.
Woodward knows how to circle the wagons and rally the donors, and the facilities and support staff game is a huge deal to coaches like Riley and Jimbo. We needed to adapt on that front and Woodward made sure of it and sold Jimbo on it. Y’all are already there which likely makes it an even easier sell and why you’re seeing reports like that if Riley is seeing your plan and pushing OU to step up

Big thing I've heard in regards to other coaching searches that Woody has completed is this: other ADs get MOAs signed and feel confident. Woody apparently doesn't sleep until an actual contract is signed by both parties, agents, University Presidents, etc. Not sure how true that is.

When Texas A&M is far more successful getting elite defensive Texas (and elsewhere) recruits than OU, it tells you which administration is 100% committed to resource investment and which isn’t.
Resources are everything in recruiting. OU was foolish to not see this coming.
A&M is successfully building a program, as Georgia has done. OU is behind the curve at a time when they’re about to be facing an SEC schedule.
