I think he should be at least interviewed. We don’t know how much the Shrimp Boat Captain buffoon meddled with his defense, although the chances are pretty high.

Not a sexy hire but I wouldn't be angry if BK retains him in some capacity.

The numbers after O was fired improved bigly and his players never quit. Our defense improved weekly the last half the season. Recruiting is a big if though.

tried to get him to run da miami defense or something

Did any local reporter ever pin O down and ask what are the characteristics of “the Miami defense”? What defines the “offense we ran at USC”? What are the key components of “the Joe Brady offense”?

I think he did a fantastic job with all the injuries and how the defense progressed as the year went on, despite those injuries.

Outstanding D in the second half of the season. He did A LOT with backups. First half was atrocious. Idk if we keep him on, but I think he should get a look based on that later part of the season. Guess BK needs to get to the bottom of what happened.

Is this a hot take? I thought most were happy with his defense at this point

He went off about “4 down, hand in the dirt, get after the QB” when we were transitioning from tFolder to tSweatshirt

Except rushing the QB with just 4 DL didn’t quite work. Pelini’s 2005-07 units could do that because they fit the scheme

As long as he stays with Dave Amanda 3-4 defense they are going to gel on defense because they switched to the 3-4 defense because they know that defense from Dave aranda

Yea guys recruited for that system—Logan, Farrell, Fonua, Roy, Clark etc— all played their best at the end of the season

Maybe White and Sampah might actually have a chance to get on the field soon

Because it's impressive to see someone improve at their job throughout the season despite the number of quality players dwindling each week. I'm all for keeping him as DC.

It's amazing what a man can do when the pressure is off! He had nothing to lose after Ed was fired why not blitz?

And I would suggest the way offense was played. Most of the passing was straight drop back from the pocket with lots of pay action of run game. Offenses in SEC were still very 2TE/1Back, 2Back/1TE and 1TE/1Back with 3 WR was considered the most pass oriented offense.

Today the 11 Personnel with 1TE/1Back and 3WR is in essence the base offense in the SEC with 4WR and 5WR sets more common.

I think it's clear O had his hands on the defense for the majority of the season. When Jones started changing things and the defense became pretty good, I think that was all him an O got the hell out of the way.

When did LSU's defense start to play well again, starting with Bama after the 2 week bye week when LSU went back to a 3-4 which gives you greater ability to blitz from different angles with different people

have said this shite for years... there is a reason the 3/4 is run all over the NFL... its multiple, you can do anything it.. and its the best defense to run against the spread offense... coaches are scared to run it because its hard to find the players to needed to run it at a high level... you need studs at pass rusher, Nose tackle, and Safetys... and add in a Devin White LB...

Really 2020 should have been a red shirt for O.

Easily could have been, had we not seen photos of him with blondes while wearing no shirt.

I also think he was trying to run it like an NFL defense. He wasn't going against NFL level Olines and Aaron Rodgers anymore. Once he realized the talent advantage he had on Dline, especially with the 3-4 and being able to attack from every angle, it really started to click for him. Whether he stays here or leaves I think he has a good future.

fair point;

my answer is- it shows somebody had an actual thought process, and was able to put ideas on the field.

Hey- I don't have Stingley and Ricks out there anymore, how can I try to contain Alabama's offense?
Pressure. Force the opponent out of the run, and force them to make quick decisions.
And, it worked.

I definitely think the lightbulb lit up with Jones in that game, and he turned the corner with it.

Seemed like a similar thing happened with Peetz in the Kentucky game- hey, if we push the ball to TDP and actually focus on the run, there's something to build around.
We lost that game, but Price did get 100 yds. The next game was Florida, where he got the huge game.
Prior to that, the offense was "pass all the time, run once in a blue moon", it didn't work and it got Max hit a bunch. Made him skittish because ALL the pressure was on him, and he wasn't getting the time to perform as he was required to. Probably ruined him for the rest of the season (might be fixable going forward).

Once we started establishing the run first, the passing game did become a bit easier.

The frustrating thing on both sides of the ball: once things began to settle out, we had lost dynamic players that would really have stood out. Imagine Boutte playing in the second half, seeing single coverage a lot more because the defense was looking at Price more often.
Imagine Stingley and Ricks playing man coverage while LSU was blitzing a lot.

We'll see that progression again next year with new coaches, but hopefully won't start from scratch again. And hopefully won't be restarting every season with new ideas, which is what happened the last two years.

All of the teams we played had bad offenses too including Bama. Alabama's offense has struggled mightily the second half. Even Auburn was stonewalling them good the majority of the game.

So is it Jones excuse that Orgeron held him back at making game adjustments because he hasn't shown the capability to adjust his scheme fluidly based on what offense is doing all season. It works or it doesn't. That's what you get from him.

He's an average DC paid elite DC money. Pay does not fit his performance. Next DC please. He had his opportunity.

Thank you for your services sir especially jumping into a shite situation with Coach O but we paying elite DC money and want to make someone highest paid DC in NCAA. You ain't it because for that money we can get someone way better.

I would say keep him on staff if he got demoted and took a big pay cut. He hasn't shown the capability to be a great recruiter though so I don't think you do that either.

We averaged like 23 PPG during that span and people are acting like he’s the next Aranda yea, the defense looked way better than historically bad but we’re not Georgia

23 ppg against SEC teams including a Bama game is pretty damn elite. I'll trust Kelly on whether or not he should be retained if Freeman doesn't work out, but that late stretch was really impressive. He was also clearly not a very good hire by O. 4 weeks of great doesn't undo 8 weeks of mediocre at best.

I mean, he was okay, and the defense in the beginning of the season required every level to be playing its A-game to be effective.

LSU led the country in sacks for the first 3-4 weeks of the season predominantly rushing 4. The problem at that point was that the overaggressive nature got slaughtered by run plays with the DL losing their gap responsibilities.

As the injuries piled up, it got worse because you lost that pass rush efficacy with the front 4. LBers were out of position, and DBs (particularly the safeties) looked lost most of the time.

In the end, they adjusted to blitzing and the 3-4 set up more and it worked. They weren't so predictable and the talent started to develop with experience. That is why it got better.

That doesn't mean Jones deserves to be retained. He could eventually become a good DC, but unless he's willing to learn it as a position coach with some more responsibility, then he isn't needed at LSU.

Reality was if you were going to go the route of hiring a guy with limited experience, O should have just made Raymond DC or co-DC.
