So going from a DL coach to a HC is a lateral transfer? Coming from Ok St to LSU is a lateral transfer? Maybe Saban coming from MSU is a lateral transfer at that time.

Saban wasn't exactly a lateral move. He went to the NFL and came back. Would he have been willing to leave LSU for Alabama if he hadn't gone to the NFL first? Don't think we can know that.

Jimbo ... Urban (2x) ... Pederson ... Kirby
This is a good list. Can probably add bama/saban as well. That's another one that worked out pretty well. And maybe Brian Kelly for ND.
As for failures... Charlie Strong, Tom Herman, Scott Frost, ...? I can't think of any others.
As for home run hires that worked out decently--neither an amazing success nor a disaster--the best one i can think of is harbaugh at michigan.

I would define a 'homerun hire' as a guy who had already proven success at the FBS or NFL level and who went on to equal or better success at the school that hired him.
By that token, only Saban at Bama and Urb at tOSU qualify. Jimbo has a shot, but I would think a true 'homerun hire' would at least have made it to his conference's CG by year 4.

But but he wasn’t even a HC! He was only a position coach, and then he was offered a HC job at UGA… pretty big jump right?
He was the DC.

I think there are two separate questions here.
The first question is "was this considered a home run hire?" The second question is "how did it turn out?"
You can have a "home run hire" that ultimately doesn't work out (see, e.g., Tom herman at Texas and Scott Frost at Nebraska).
Also, I don't think that you need to have been a head coach previously to have been considered a home run hire. I would say that Kirby, for example, was considered a home run hire at UGA.

What about Saban to LSU from Michigan State? His taking over for Dinardo and company was a different animal than Miles taking over from Saban.

Herman bunted but then fell over the ball going to 1st!

Yea my point is that DC at Bama is not the same as a HC coach UGA. The arguments about people going to the playoffs and not winning actually means something.

Brian Kelly for ND
It’s not like Notre Dame was burning down after Charlie Weiss, I mean he has them in the National Championship game back in 06-07’. Kelly hasn’t won anything of significance. No national championships, loses rivalry games, and loses playoff games.

So? A program doesn't have to be "burning down" in order to make a home run hire.

...no he didn't. Charlie Weiss never got ND to a BCS championship game.

This doesn't mean Kelly hasn't worked out great. It just means that ND is a very difficult program at which to win a national championship in modern college football. They haven't won a championship since 1988, and Kelly has at least gotten them to 2 playoffs and a BCS champ game.
I am literally 100% certain that if you asked 100 notre dame fans whether the Kelly hire has been a success, at least 95 of them would answer with a resounding yes. He's BY FAR the most successful ND football coach in modern history.

So we should bunt?
Hire Bill O Brien and go 8-4 for the next 20 years?

Bobby Petrino to Arkansas.
I actually considered Brett Bielema a home run at the time they hired him. I was wrong.

I am saying lateral moves. OU and LSU have the same resources.
