I think there are two separate questions here.
The first question is "was this considered a home run hire?" The second question is "how did it turn out?"
This is what I came to clarify. To satisfy OP’s question, the hire must have 1st been considered a “home run” at the time of the hire. Then the 2nd is, obviously what you said—“how did it turn out?” I think, after time and the benefit of hindsight, it’s hard to answer the 1st question without looking through the prism of the answer to the 2nd. And of course, what’s your interpretation of “home run” and “success” relative to expectations.
At least for me. Maybe I have a bad memory. You suggest Kirby was a home run at the time. For me, it’s hard to look back at that hiring without the current knowledge of the absolute monster he’s created.
But I don’t remember him being universally considered a home run. Georgia fans probably did. But I’m sure you could easily dig up multiple threads from here almost laughing at it, hiring the DC at Bama when “it was really Saban’s defense all along,” and references to “1980,” etc…But we are usually really dumb on this board more than others because we try to talk ourselves into our hires being great and others being terrible.

Strong work clarifying. I should have been more clear. Thank you.

I am saying lateral moves. OU and LSU have the same resources.
I was responding to the OP. Nothing in it about lateral moves. Those are extremely rare period.
The handful that might qualify are:
Fairbanks from OU to Colorado
Rich Rod (His alma mater at the top of his game to UM)
Tuberville (OM to AU)
Jimbo (but FSU was festering)

And which one of those coaches has had success

Name someone other than Saban in NCAA football that was a homerun hire success. Typically the harder you swing for that HR, the more you actually miss.
Well, right now, Saban is college football. Because of him, lots of great coaches haven't sniffed a natty when they otherwise would have. He may be the benchmark because he's at the top, but it's a brutally unfair mark to hit for others.
I hate to prop up that angry sawed off keebler elf, but that's just the truth.

Is it though? Swinging for the fence causes you to strikeout more than actually bring in RBI’s.
Urban has done it. Saban has done it. Jimbo could possibly do it. Kirby wasn’t a HR hire. Not football but related as many would say Jay Johnson isn’t a HR hire initially, but he is killing it already.

Oh no, that’s not what I meant. I came to clarify what I thought the OP meant that people were misunderstanding and found you had already done it. I was just adding a little bit, but the clarification was done by you, HT.

Don't recall how Fairbanks did but I don't think it was anything special.
Rich Rod flopped.
Jimbo - TBD at A&M
Tuberville - I think he was successful at AU. '04 went undefeated.
