Back then, LSU was not a top tier team. Saban was a questionable hire. He learned to coach at LSU.

By this same argument if LSU had kept Les, and he won every game with the exception of Alabama, you'd be in favor of keeping him?

The real problem is that the evidence of O's ability to sustain a program long term is lacking --- in fact, the evidence shows a complete inability to sustain a program. He needs to go to a mid-major or small Power 5 for a few years to prove that his Ole Miss tenure --- which was indisputably one of the worst coaching jobs in the SEC since Curley Hallman --- won't be repeated here.

How many wins versus the top 5, 10, or 25 did O have at ole miss? I wasn't claiming O should have beaten Bama this year, only stating Herman has beaten two top 5 teams, strengthening his resume versus O's.

correct. This is how it's almost always done.

First head coaching jobs:

Saban - Toledo
Meyer - Bowling Green
Harbaugh - Univ. of San Diego

and especially when a guy's only prior permanent HC experience was a 3-21 record in the SEC. Got to go to a mid-major and prove it before you get called back up to the big leagues.

I'm not a coon arse and dgaf what accent he has. I don't want a coach that has by far the most talent in the acc and has underachieved greatly over the past 2 seasons. He won a title with crablegs. One would think people would have learned their lesson with hallman.

Lmao. You have to be one of the most IQ lacking posters on this board. I'm not even an O guy, but the MF will have been a head coach at two major programs recently and had great success. Good god the lack of intelligence by some of you.

Saban inherited a Mich St program that had not had a winning season in 4 years and was hit with a reduction of 9 scholarships while he was there.

O inherited an Ole Miss program that was 44-29 the previous 6 seasons and 2 years removed from a tie for first in the SEC West.

Not quite the same situation.

Saban, Jimbo and Hermann were also accomplished coordinators by the time they became head coaches. O has never been a coordinator. The only time he has had charge of a program from top to bottom it got worse, not better.

He spent tons of time at USC on different occasions. They knew him well. They did not hire him. This should tell you something.

Hiring Orgeron would be the very definition of "no brainer." Somehow, I feel we disagree on whether or not to view that as a positive.

That's just patently false.

Yes, it's been a real miracle that a team and offense that was designed to run the football has been able to run effectively against terrible run defenses.

Yes, the hire they made was a good one. Lmao. Sometimes I wonder how some of you get to and from work daily without getting lost.

Stop lobbying for these other coaches who aren't really that great! Jimbo is past his prime and Herman may end up being a great coach, but it is still a major risk to think he can move into the SEC and beat Alabama or anyone else for that matter.

Worked miracles ? He beat a bunch of mediocre teams by running 50 x's a game. He had no plan for an equal or more talented team. He has never been a coordinator. Syracuse wouldn't even interview him!!! In 30 years not one person has offered him a DC job. And ole miss gives him a shot and he absolutely shite the bed. He needs to go to a mid major and build a winner from start to finish not an interim stint and then we can talk about him getting one of the best jobs in the country
