Brent Key got the job. Will be named within the next 24 hours

So says ESPN. I hope it’s more reliable than the earlier rumors.

Huge mistake by GT

Not really. They can't afford to hire a guy looking for his last paycheck when a rebuild is still in order.

Finances are a big issue...Fritz would have required us to buyout his contract. With Key we don't have to worry about that and can use the money saved for a better coaching staff. Key also already has backers in place to support NIL. With Fritz we would have had to start over on that front as well.

Unless he just falls on his face, Key is likely the quickest way to get back over the first hurdle which is going to a bowl game (sucks to say but that's where we are).

"That’s a nice conversation with dad and mom"

Well, Pedro, looks like "dad and mom" may have had some pretty dang good "sauces"

Key was a part of the staff who produced results poor enough to ultimately get the HC fired...so because he scraped by to win a few ACC games in the interim they think someone who was a part of the inadequate staff will suddenly make the program better?

The absolutely best case scenario of that approach succeeding is Dabo Swinney at Clemson. Second to that is Orgeron at LSU...before he brought the program down to 20 year lows. However, when Dabo and O had the interim tag removed, both Clemson and LSU were winning programs. They just weren't winning "enough". GT hasn't had a winning season in 4 years.

I'm not saying Fritz would have been my first choice. But this seems like a really lazy hire. GT is not one of the top athletic departments in the US. But they haven't' historically been complete dog shite either. It has resources to be successful.

You should look at his career path a little closer.

I'm confident I'm a little more dialed in to the happenings of the program than you are.

You say he was a part of the staff that led to the HC being fired.

I say that Key threatened to leave to go to South Carolina last offseason because he knew the HC had lost all control of what was happening and wasn't allowing the assistants to do their job. Collins micromanaged every aspect of the program to his detriment and lost the faith of his assistants. He nearly lost Key. He did lose Marco Coleman (who was a really good DL coach). He did lose Tashard Choice to Texas...he was probably our best recruiter on the staff and had MJ Morris and Damari Alston all but locked up until Collins started dicking around with other recruits. Those 4 stars went elsewhere and here we are.

Key completely changed the way practices were run and all of a sudden we stopped turning the ball over and stopped committing a bunch of dumbass penalties. He also saw the offense was going nowhere and rumor has it turned over playcalling duties to Chris Weinke the last 2 games...which happened to be our best offensive gameplans of the year while running our 3rd/4th string QBs out there.

Key won more games in the last 8 than Collins ever did in a full season, all conference wins as well. I thought he'd get the fulltime job once they beat UNC and didn't get embarrassed by UGA.

I am not sure what it is worth but Saban and Kirby Smart both think very highly of him too. This isn't some random dude that just fell arse backwards into a HC job.

Saban on Key

The difference in quality of play from the first half of the season to the second was obvious. Idk if that was Key’s doing or not, but I understand why they’re hiring him.

It was. Once consistent thing I've seen repeated, from Saban to O'Leary to about everybody he's worked for, is that he puts in the work and kids will run through a brick wall for him. We were on the 3rd and 4th string QB by the time we got to UNC, and absurdly outmanned at 11-0 UGA.
