Former LSU coach Morris Watts to Pitt(offensive coordinator)

That is the hot rumor on the Pitt board. Do any of the older LSU fans recall Watts? He apparently was at LSU under Dinardo(95-98).
He is 74 years old now. I guess it is too much to ask about anyone recalling his offenses and whether he was good or bad at scheming?

Yeah, LSU ran the quite a bit of option with Herb Tyler and Kevin Faulk. He was decent given the talent we had back then. He's not somebody they should be excited about.

Herb was probably a better runner than pure passer, although we had some excellent talent on those teams with Kevin Faulk, Rondell Mealey, Cecil Collins, Kevin Mawae, Eddie Kennison, David LeFluer and Alan Fanaca.
I can't say I remember ever being "wowed" by any of his calls or anything.

He did a good job at LSU with what he had to work with. His offensive lines were very good and the running game was awesome. He didn't have much to work with at QB with Herb but he maximized Herb's throwing talent that's for sure. He did a solid job at LSU no doubt. He was the OC at Miami(OH) under Haywood this year so it's only logical that Haywood would try to get him to come with him to Pitt. He was also Nick Saban's OC at Michigan State in 1999 and that was the best offense MSU had under Saban, and they went 10-2 which was Saban's best record at MSU. On a side note, Carl Reese was the DC at Miami(OH) this year so don't be surprised if he is the new DC at Pitt either.

ran an effective offense. The 98 team scored on anybody and everybody. The biggest problem was that anybody and everybody scored more on Lou Teppers defense. The biggest problem with LSU during the Dinardo era was the strength program. Saban was blown away with how weak many of the linemen were when he got here. That was one of the first area's the team improved.

The DiNardo era showed how important good coordinators are. DiNardo was a genius when he had a good OC and DC (Watts and Reese), and a bum when he didn't (Tepper).

Watts will probably be the OC as a mentor to someone on the offensive staff that will take over eventually

If I seem to recall Haywood was the runningbacks coach at that time. Probably considers Watts as a mentor-Probably similar style offenses. Nothing flashy about either one of those guys. One good year at LSU under Dinardo with Kevin Faulk, Mcfarland,Kennison, Ryan Clark. What has Haywwod done since?

He was with Haywood at Miami of O, along with Bull Reese and a few more with La. ties.

Morris Watts did a really good job at LSU. I would LOVE to have Morris Watts right now. We would have won the NC with him as OC.

At times yes, but most kids and wives learn to adapt. I know many of the kids bond with other coaches kids. Look at Army Brats, same thing. A buddy of mines daughter is at Auburn now for college, that was one of his stops while coaching.
