Interesting name to keep an eye on with the UNLV coaching vacancy: former TCU coach Gary Patterson.

That makes no sense unless GP just wants a retirement job in Las Vegas for fun.

To coach or do a Vegas Show he is a pretty good guitar player.

Not sure why he’d do that unless he has inside info that UNLV is Pac12 bound. Seems like he could get a better retirement gig.

Okay. I hadn't thought of this but this makes more sense now. The program looked to be on the upswing with Arroyo but if they are moving to the Pac 12 and investing in the program financially I can see why someone like Patterson would be interested.

I don’t think UNLV doesn’t fit the academic profile of the Pac-12, and their football and basketball teams wouldn’t bring anything to the table revenue wise. They would just be another mouth to feed off the revenue pie. This isn’t the ‘80s and ‘90s. I don’t think they’re in play there.

Not sure why Patterson would want that job but it would be a good get for UNLV.

The commissioner is from Vegas, they already play their conference championships in basketball and football in Vegas. It's obviously a market they are courting.

It's not far fetched.

The commissioner has gone on record as saying that the past issues with academics and religion will no longer be barriers to adding teams. These were issues in the past with potentially adding BYU, and more recently Baylor and TCU were discussed.

They should add San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State, UNLV, New Mexico and potentially Gonzaga and MAYBE St. Mary's in basketball only.

This would give them a school in every far western state except Wyoming and Montana.

They could even consider adding SMU to get a team in Texas and the central time zone. This would help with TV packages and recruiting.

They should market and hang their hat on being the conference of the West.

UNLV needs a coach that runs the Run & Shoot, has good contacts with JuCos, and can work the transfer portal. Pretty much what June Jones did at Hawaii

Makes sense to me. Low pressure job. Kinda what John Robinson did 20 years ago.

Would love to see Patterson eventually in the SEC either as a HC or DC.

If the PAC-12 wants to survive, they don’t have the luxury of giving a shite about that anymore. Vegas is one of the few growing TV markets in the West they aren’t already in. It makes sense to plant a flag there and grow them as a program for the future.

Correct. Even if the brought them in at a substantially reduced payout, it would be a smart move.

I think being in a big conference would increase their support. It seems Vegas is a market their commissioner is trying to court. They play their basketball and football championships there and he's a Vegas guy.

If the Pac-12 can convince Berkeley to let in San Diego State, then UNLV is another logical choice. In the past, UNLV was hampered by three primary issues:

1) Commuter school perception
2) Las Vegas apathy for local teams
3) Horrible stadium (Sam Boyd)

Now that UNLV can play in Allegiant, they suddenly have one of the nicest venues in the West Coast. The success of the Raiders and Golden Knights show there is potential for locals to support multiple LV teams. And UNLV is slowly becoming a more mature institution with the development of its medical school and its new R1 status.

The main thing holding UNLV back now is a lack of historical football success. If UNLV can find a coach who can recruit overlooked players from California, Utah, and Arizona (homegrown talents typically want to leave) and work the transfer portal effectively, the perception of the program could change quickly.

According to their new commissioner, this is no longer an issue.

Unfortunately this old prejudice against religious schools and those with lower academic standards has already cost them BYU, which should be in the Pac 12. The should cut a deal with them and try to get them to come aboard.

San Diego State, Fresno State, UNLV, Boise State and New Mexico make the most sense. Potentially add SMU and maybe Gonzaga as basketball only.

Would give them a school in every western state except Montana and Wyoming.

Are there any NIL restrictions on representing gambling institutions/businesses?
