While Riley and Day didn't build programs they certainly haven't destroyed their programs or shown inconsistency.
Sure but they also took over existing structure of 2 well managed programs that historically have been consistent.

Look at the new UW coach he's basically sunk the program from what Petersen accomplished
Look at what Helfrich did to Chips Oregon program
Look at what Rich Rod did to Carrs Michigan program
Look what Charlie Weiss and Muschamp did to Urbana Florida program
Look at what Kiffin and Sark did to Carrils USC program.
Look at what Strong did to UT
I mean the list goes on. Day and Riley deserve props for keeping consistency and elevating the program.

There were also some great assistant coaches who made terrible head coaches. You're cherry-picking here to boost your argument.
Hiring a coach is a gamble. There is no sure-fire method. Hopefully our AD is smart and diligent enough to not eliminate anyone because he comes from a similar background as someone else.

Stop fooling yourself. Not a chance Woodward puts his job on line hiring Napier. Napier won’t even make Woodys short list.

Besides Helfrich, who went 33-8 his first 3 years at Oregon and played for a NC, none of those coaches took over a stable program from a HC who just stepped aside.
They were all outside hires and many made significant changes to the style of play.
And really my point is, we don’t have the option of hiring internally to maintain our program.

Derek Dooley- had losing record at la tech. got the job soley based on name alone
Gus Malzahn (win% 66)- did pretty good at auburn. cant call him a failure. Played for a NC and was one game from making playoffs.
Eli Drink- just got to Mizz and has them playing better. was only a HC for one year at APp state and took over ready made program.
Satterfield- after long time at APP state he took over a louisville program that was destroyed and had good first year. Jury still out.
Neal brown-took over WVU in an area he didnt know how to recruit and a program that has been extremely hard to recruit to and doesnt put a ton into their program.
Scott frost- is a dumbass. Know it all dumbass. but he took over a UCF program that only had 1 bad year. 1. then went to a nebraska program that is extremely hard to win at. His failure has caught a lot off guard but most that understand nebraska and where it is.....saw it coming.
Justin Fuente- deserves credit for turning memphis around. and has done well at VT when he had beamers players. cant recruit for shite.
Dino Babers- he is at a program that will not invest to win. period. had them rolling but has fallen off due to how hard it is to recruit there and the lack of resources.
Matt wells- yea a guy that had the same amount of losing seasons as wining seasons in G5 is comparable to Napier.
Dave clawson- same dave clawson that has had WF with a winning record 5 of the 9 seasons at Wake? same Clawson that has them 6-0? Before Covid he had 4 winning seasons in a row and they have bounced back. been great at Wake, wtf you talking about.
Dave Doeren- he is 60-47 at NC State. That is pretty damn good for them.
Norvell is second season at FSU. but he took over a ready made Memphis program and just kept it going.
your points dont really hold up when all of the ones you named are at way inferiour programs than LUS and have way less resources. then
Malzahn, Clawson, Doeren have been pretty good.

not really
Iowa St 2020- WOn
Texas 2021- UT has signficantly more talent
App st 2019- 2nd season at ULL, of course they werent ready.
Bama 2018- no way he could ever win that one.
Miss st 2018- so we are expecting ULLs coach to beat a team that won 8 games int he SEC now? Especially in his first year?
he also lost to coastal last year by 3 when they were ranked i beleive.
but To think he was going to beat some of those teams in his 1st or second season is dumb as frick.

The only coaches that went straight from G5 to P5 as first time coaches that had any ounce of success is Tressel and Petersen.
People just don't seem to understand that there's a lot more to being successful in the P5 than just being able to coach football.
The list you added of "misses" is very telling because several of them looked a LOT better on paper than dudes being considered now.

Yea to think Urban could go 2-0 against ranked teams and bring Utah to its first ever BCS bowl game after the previous HC went 4-7 then 7-5 in his last season was fools gold.
Same for Brian Kelly that went 10-5 against ranked teams and 2 BCS bowl games when the previous head coach went a staggering 19-34 before Kelly.
Stop making excuses other coaches got it done.

Sorry, I can’t be preached upon by someone that didn’t know Utah & cincy were G5 schools just last week

Now compare him to Tom Herman
Posted on 10/21/21 at 2:00 pm to Magician2
the problem here is that you're equating the talent and overall situation at Ull with that of utah or cincinnati.
true, they might all three be g5 schools but they certainly arent equal in terms of resources or talent. one is a current p5 school while the other will become one soon. Ull is in no danger of being invited to a p5 conference

...Utah was not a P5 team when Urban Meyer was there, and I don't mean that in the "well acshually the P5 terminology was invented for the college football playoffs" sense. Utah was in the Mountain west until 2011.
Napier is a good coach. I have some slight reservations about how well he can recruit, but he's good at Xs and Os and has spent more than enough time around true dynasties to know what winning in the P5 is about. He is not a Tom Herman who spent most of his career at nobody schools until Texas said "Hi, win a conference title almost immediately or you're fired".
