1-4 vs ranked opponents (in 4th season)
Best bowl game Lending Tree

Coaches that were G5 coaches that went P5:
Urban Meyer | 2 yrs at Utah (2-0 vs ranked opponent) first ever BCS bowl game
Previous HC went 4-7 then 7-5 before Meyer

Brian Kelly | 4 yrs at Cincy (10-5 vs ranked opponents) went to 2 BCS bowl games first time ever
Previous HC went 7-5, 4-7, 8-5

What to these 2 coaches have in common? They both won consistently at their prior G5 spots in BGSU and CMU.

The only coaches that went straight from G5 to P5 as first time coaches that had any ounce of success is Tressel and Petersen.
Tressel at YSU for 14 yrs... 138-56 with 4 D1-AA titles
Petersen at Boise for 10 yrs... 92-12 with multiple BCS bowl games

Coaches that also went straight from G5 to P5 that either failed or are showing no consistent success:
Derek Dooley
Gus Malzahn (win% 66)
Eli Drink
Satterfield
Neal brown
Scott frost
Justin Fuente
Dino Babers
Matt wells
Dave clawson
Dave Doeren
* not counting Norvell or Huepel because they are in yr 1

Coaches that went from a coordinator position to HC without prior HC experience:
Dabo
Kirby
Day
Riley
Stoops (mark)
Fickell
Pittman

Is Napier a good coach? Yes. I think what's he's done is good at ULL.

Stastically coaches that have only been a one time HC at G5 that hop straight to P5 (after 3/5 yrs in G5) don't pan out. Doesn't mean that trend can't break.

I wouldn't mind Napier as a head coach but people need to take off the red and black glasses and understand some prior trends and history of coaches prior to Napier.

I truly believe Woodward will put lsu in the best position through his process and due diligence. And if that ends up being Napier - let's ride.

Meyer and Kelly had more talent upon arrival at those schools than Napier had when he arrived at UL. He's going to do a great job at LSU.

He's a good coach but I agree, if this guy came off anyone else's coaching tree nobody would even mention him here. Chasing past obsession with Saban is dangerous just because the one you loved got away from you.

I like seeing stuff like this. I am sort of big on trends.

I'm not sure the next Saban exists.

I still prefer that LSU aims higher, but Napier may be a good fallback option.

Nobody knows how the next coach will do at LSU. LSU will evaluate all candidates better than anybody on this board and will hire what they think is the right coach. As fans let them do their job and support the coach they hire.

I see him as a fallback option too and wouldn't be angry at all. I'd be okay with it. All that being said, it really annoys me the obsession people have at comparing him to Saban. There's no other Saban and you're not going to obtain it from anyone off his coaching tree. That's the facts. The dude is the greatest coach ever in NCAA.

How do you know that?

I literally posted the prior HC records before they took over and those records suggest the talent wasn't there.....

I’m okay with skepticism. But, the “if anyone else’s tree” comments are silly.

The reason coaching trees have any value is that those coaches CHOOSE good people to work with.

If I chose an assistant coach or Saban chose an assistant coach- who is more likely to be better at choosing his assistant coach?

A much better argument than “he’s our BAW”.

G5 is the only point against Billy. But it has been done successfully, as you pointed out.

Would I prefer Riley? Yes.
Would I prefer Kiffin? No.
Aranda? Might not even want the job / not a huge leap from Napier.
Fickel? You pay him the most & keep him for 3 years.
Dabo? No
Jimbo? No
Franklin? Ehhh maybe?
Freeze? Not happening
Tucker? Meh

Except for this doesn't apply to Saban's coaching tree. You get a lot of great coaches coming off great mind coaching trees. Saban's is the complete opposite and nobody here is questioning why that is? Did you ever think that maybe Saban is so difficult to deal with and has such a big ego he only needs assistants who can take the workload off the mastermind himself? It just further shows how incredible of a coach he is to go through assistants like he does and never miss any consistency. It just further strokes his ego. And no, the comment isn't silly because a big reason anyone on here wants him is because he's off that coaching tree due to past obsession with Saban who was here turning Bama into a dynasty. You're not capturing a Saban again. I doubt we see anything like that in our lifetime.

Mich St (Big Ten finish)
6-5-1 (5th) Loss in Independence bowl
6-6 (5th) Loss in Sun Bowl
7-5 (6th) Loss in Aloha Bowl
6-6 (6th)
9-2 (T-2nd)

Not coaching currently but Bob Stoops was the DC at UF before becoming HC at OU.

Don't think he had any prior HC experience.

I think your evaluation of Saban’s assistant coaches is incorrect.

That is fine. We all have our opinions.

I was only reacting to the “if anyone else’s tree” comment.

I believe Napier is a star in the making. It is a little early. So, there is indeed risk and maybe LSU need not take that risk. Fair. I think he’d kill it here. But, there are more proven options and if Scott gets one of those - cool

I’ll cheer like hell for whoever it is. I hope he’s a smart, well spoken dude.

Correct and Mark Richt was OC at FSU under Bowden before UGA but I left them off because I had to cap it as some point in the past. Otherwise the post would be unreadable how long it would be with more data

If they made a Napier hire I'd be behind it I'm just a little skeptical based on some things I've seen. We could do much worse that's for sure and he's definitely an upgrade. I just think LSU has bigger fish they're trying to fry and he's a candidate, just not at the top.

What about Cristobal?

1 year as a Co-OC and a few years as position coaches after burning out at a G5 school. FIU

Also let’s throw out Ou and OSU as a model. We don’t have an internal young OC candidate who can take over a well oiled machine.

I like Riley and Day, but they didn’t build their programs.

I didn't use Crisobal because there's only a handful of coaches that went his speciric route. We could use O in that same category as him but I didn't want to use that specific group because they haven't showed consistent success.

I just wanted to portray HC to HC (no in between) and coordinators to first time HC's.

While Riley and Day didn't build programs they certainly haven't destroyed their programs or shown inconsistency. You can throw Kirby in with them as well because Richt didn't leave the cupboard bear either.
