Too much negativity for my tastes. Some fret about Kelly's ability to recruit in the South and Dinich whines ominously about the Title IX investigation.

F 'em. He's a very good coach.

The more times I see people question the hire and then the only reason they can come up with for questioning it is "Kelly's personality might not fit in Louisiana" or "he doesn't know how to eat crawfish", it makes me more and more optimistic.

Like what the frick are we talking about here? Who gives a shite about his personality? If he can recruit and coach and win games, nobody will care. And by all accounts he can do those things.

Brian Kelly should definitely be punished in 2022 for what Derrius Guice and Les Miles did or didn’t do in 2015.

Alex Scarborough and Mark Schlabach are the only ones who seem to have the ability to think critically rather than just throwing out baseless platitudes.

Scarborough on concerns regarding the "fit":

quote:

I understand the notion that Kelly will be a fish out of water in Baton Rouge. I can't picture him peeling a crawfish, either. But remember who took over the program in late 1999. Nick Saban didn't have a single tie to the region when he arrived at LSU. He was a West Virginia kid who coached primarily in the Big Ten, and he made it work, winning a national championship in 2003. And I wonder if Kelly's thought process in choosing LSU was that dissimilar from Saban's back then when he felt he'd maxed out at Michigan State, looked around and realized that LSU was a gold mine in a state loaded with talent (it has the highest number of NFL players per capita in the country) and no other Power 5 school with which to compete.

Schlabach on recruiting concerns:

quote:

Kelly's best player at Notre Dame this season was safety Kyle Hamilton, who is from Atlanta. Jerry Tillery, who in 2019 became the first Irish defensive lineman to be drafted in the first round in 22 years, is from Shreveport, Louisiana. It's not like Kelly hasn't recruited any players from the South. I've always said that LSU is one of the top two or three jobs in the country because almost every kid in that state grows up dreaming about playing for the Tigers. In Georgia, a lot of kids want to play for the Bulldogs, but just as many end up playing for Alabama, Florida, Ohio State and LSU because there are so many of them. Kids from California leave for schools all over the country. Recruiting won't be a problem for Kelly and his staff. Quite frankly, his biggest challenge is cleaning up the mess that Orgeron created over the past two seasons. LSU's culture was broken, players were opting out left and right, and the coaching staff was a mess.

I would possibly give more credence to the "fit" concerns if LSU didn't just have to fire the best cultural fit they could ever hire.

Saban and Miles weren't "fits". They seemed to do just fine in recruiting.

That’s because Scarborough and Schlabach are southerners. They get it.

Nick Saban had absolutely no ties to Louisiana and came with much less prestige than Kelly. I think he'll do just fine in the South. These Yankee reporters are just upset that the SEC keeps getting stronger while everyone else picks up the scraps.

Schlabach: "Kelly's run at Notre Dame was probably the second best in school history, behind only Knute Rockne's, although he never guided the Irish to a national championship"

Jesus, do these people not even bother to do research? Rockne's run wasn't even the best in school history, and Kelly's isn't in the top 4.

The people questioning if Kelly will be able to recruit down here are crazy. Les Miles is one of the strangest human being I ever seen and dude cleaned up down here.

How is Kelly the winningest coach in ND history of none of his runs are even hardly top 5?

Seriously wondering because I don’t feel like doing research on ND lol

Rockne (0.881), Leahy (0.855), Parseghian (0.836), Holtz (0.765), and Devine (0.764) all had better winning percentages than Kelly (0.729) and all won national championships (multiple in the cases of Leahy with 4, Rockne with 3, and Parseghian with 2) to Kelly's 0. People forget, but Leahy was Saban before Saban came along with a stretch from 1943 - 1949 that was about as good as there has ever been in the sport.

Kelly's "all time winningest coach" adjective is purely a function of playing 13+ games per year and longevity.
