What you heard was “this is a coveted job”

But what was said was “this is a coveted job for the people I’ve spoken too recently”

That sentence has a wide range of potential meaning based on who he recently talked to. If he talked to the top candidates then yeah you’d be onto something, but if he just talked to Adam Gase, guessing you wouldn’t have the same impression


Again as I said repeatedly in the thread you are referring to, it’s 1 HC job out of 32 possible HC jobs at this level. You aren’t going to be shortage of people who want the job.

But it’s silly to pretend like it isn’t objectively a worse situation to walk into than the other jobs open and will likely not be appealing to the candidates that have offers from the other teams.

I know what you're saying but for argument's sake:

Chicago - in a very difficult division, have to play in bad weather, Caleb might suck, and horrible ownership which is about to get worse as kids fight over inheritance.

Raiders - another bad and cheap owner, fired coach after one year who was set up to fail. No QB. Another tough division (Mahomes, Hebert, and now Broncos look good)

Patriots - media spotlight, intrusive owner, fired coach after one year in a clear rebuilding situation. Probably going to Vrabel anyway.

Jets - do I have to say anything? Media spotlight, bad owner (cussed out backup QB in locker room this year), no QB, horrible history.

Jaguars - Trent Baalke. And is Trevor any good?

ETA - I know the fans hate Gayle, but the Saints and Jags probably have the best ownership situation from a coaching hire standpoint - mostly hands-off and patient. NFC south is an easy division (relative to others). New coach may be on board with sucking for a season or two if it's part of a plan and he knows the owner will be patient.

I guess that makes sense. As long as they get Loomis to agree to go into tank mode for a year or 2 to clean up the salary cap situation and just deal with the pain of sucking now instead of continuing to restructure deals that improve the short term in exchange for mortgaging the future.

Ok, then lets keep doing it the way Loomis has been doing it....

Keep restructuring contracts to make a little bit of cap space for a team that's nowhere near contending for anything. Keep kicking the can down the road. Then you can make sure your roster is good enough to still win 6 or 7 games. You still aren't a contender or making the playoffs, you're not drafting in a good position to try to get a franchise QB, and the coach is still going to get fired by year 4 because you're not making the playoffs.

The Saints have $50M in dead cap money for 2026 just from void years on contracts because Loomis was kicking the can down the road the past couple of years on teams that weren't even close to being legit contenders.

All those salary cap games were fine when we still had Brees and a roster around him that was expected to win 11-12 games every year and be a legit threat to make another Super Bowl run.
