During a postgame interview with Arizona Sports, Dillingham said that he is giving his players the week off with a bye coming up next week. “This has been an emotional season and I’m about to give these guys literally the entire week off,” Dillingham said.

If LSU were a near playoff lock, no one would care.

Saban treated the 03 bye week like a game week and what happened? Florida came in and beat the Tigers 19-7.

sometimes a break is a good thing, both physically and mentally.

Look, I know football coaches are known for sleeping in their office during the season, but is that really required?

Law of diminishing returns. It's possible to get the work done and still live a somewhat normal life. Work smarter, not longer.

Hell, I remember Spurrier at UF worked normal hours. And the kids are limited to 20 hour per week, including the game.

I have a story about that bye week.

They dedicated the locker room to Jeff Boss one afternoon when i was walking back from class to my car. I stopped and listened to Mr. Boss give a brief speech to a small group of assorted boosters, as did Saban and Mark Emmert.

I was about to be on my way when Emmert invited everyone to walk around the locker room, an offer i took him up on. I was the youngest person there by 30 years and had a backpack on, I guess they just assumed I was someone’s kid. After walking around a bit, touching the win bar, etc, I headed for the door…where Emmert and Saban were shaking everyone’s hand as they left.

I got a bit nervous but decided to just act like I was supposed to be there. Mark was very nice and didn’t think anything of it, asked me what I was studying. Saban on the other hand looked incredibly pissed to have to shake this punk kid’s hand and felt like he knew I wasn’t supposed to be there, but didn’t want to call me on it in case I was someone’s kid. I wished him luck for the rest of the season and high tailed it out of there.

ha...I attended a Sugar Bowl party for the LSU coaches during the week leading up to the 2003 BCS title game...when I went to shake Saban's hand, he also gave me a death stare...he shook it but you could tell he didn't want to...

Little did Saban know he was shaking the hand of the most powerful message board baron in all of college sports

Coaching for effectiveness is a coach who understands and has spent time around his team. Good for him.

The SEC Spurrier documentary/interview with Kenny Chesney shows the times that spurrier and assistants were at the beach before games against Tennessee. “You think them Tennessee coaches are at the beach?”
Worked for him an awful lot.

Players is one thing, but coaches I do not get that at all. Also, might depend on the team you play next.

I may or may not have gotten in on a N.B.A. game at LSU with Saban and staff. They needed a 4th player for a team and I just happened to be in the gym fixing an audio issue with a speaker. We didn't win BTW.
