Was the only reason he was retained because of an emotional upset of MSU?

Probably because the NCAA coming drop the hammer on them and he’s an alum / loyal to ride it out then in 5 years replace him. Win over MSU was nothing.

Yes that and right now not being a very good time to be HC hunting. Beating your hated instate rival on their field goes a long way in our conference man. You know that.

No, but coach O sure did.

Look at the comparisons:

-Stewart was a good ole West Virginian and was "one of them" and WVU was his dream job.

-Stewart was fired for a miserable performance at his previous head coaching job (VMI) going 8-25.

-Stewart had never been a coordinator but he "helped out" with the special teams (which was not a good unit under his direction)

-Both were hired by incompetent AD's, Alleva and Pastilong. Stewart in fact was hired at 3am by the AD in a drunken stupor celebration following the Fiesta Bowl win over OU. Not even kidding, you can look it up.

No, he got hired because no one else wanted it with the looming sanctions.

I tell you what. That more recent game between LSU and West Virginia (Miles vs Stewart) was a derp fest.

I think he earned the opportunity to guide them through the ensuing shite.

If the NCAA is about to lay the wood, then his hiring was a smart move on their part. Being an alum, he’s willing to ride out the storm. If they had to go find a coach with this cloud hanging over them, there’s no telling how bad it would look. Having him on baked ahead of time keeps the PR hits to a minimum.

Stewart's record a WVU is still a good bit better than Holgerson

Dude was hired because he was likely the only one who wanted the job not knowing what the penalties will be. Plus let’s be honest the guy did a damn good job to hold things together under the situation.

Those records don't really tell the story though.

Stewart was 9-4, 9-4, and 9-4 which looks okay on paper, but the Big East was at its worst during his time. Not to mention the drubbings by ECU, Syracuse, and Colorado.

Dana's been underwhelming but still a better coach.

That was Geno Smith's freshman year and he kept lining up under the guard because the stadium was so loud.

Considering he was on campus during all the violations.

Right, but Stewart wasn't the train wreck everybody though he would be.

The players loved him and played hard for him for 3 years.
Holgo has had years where the players quit on him and one year he quit on his players.

being Ole Miss HC right now is kind of like asking someone to drive a bus into a wall. It might turn out ok, but then again you might be screwed up for life. He was the only one willing to drive that bus.

Good guy, loyal as hell, keep this ship from blowing up. Went 6-6 With best player out. Deserves the job, and let’s face it no one will look at until NCAA sanctions are in.
