I guess it is possible, but the odds are better that he would be a failure.

Not to mention the giant buyout that was just paid to Gus. If the administration is willing to write that check, you don't follow up by hiring Steele. You make a big splash or get a young up and comer like a Napier or Chadwell and roll the dice there.

Steele is a good guy and a good defensive football coach. He has a large network of football people that he's developed over his long career. But there's a reason he hasn't been named a HC at a big time school after all of these years and all of his stops at other big time programs. You think that now, when he is about to turn 63 is the time for him to catch that big break and step into the HC role at Auburn? I'm sure rival fanbases would love it and laugh their asses off at it. And they would be justified in doing so because Auburn has given up on trying to win the second they hire him as head coach.

Until he has a mental breakdown like in the Orange bowl when he was at Clemson.
