Big fish hires are rare...Do you think Sark was a big fish for Texas? Was Kirby Smart a big fish when he was hired by Georgia? How about Ryan Day? Dabo?

How many of those are Scott Woodward hires? You named 4. How about Kim Mulkey, Jimbo Fisher, Buzz Williams, and Chris Peterson for $100 Alex?

Scott hired Sark to Washington...popular hire but not a big fish. I wouldn't call Buzz Williams a big fish.

Mulkey, Jimbo and Petersen (with an "e") are his big fish hires...but, again, it was all about timing for those coaches. They made sense at the time. Riley doesn't make sense to me (from Riley's perspective).

my point is that landing the big fish is difficult...it won't be Woodward's fault if he doesn't get one...It's all about the timing of the coaches being sought.

Exactly....I expressed the same sentiments about three days ago, writing the following:

We all want the best coach we can get, and it's generally accepted that LSU is the best job available this year. But I can't wrap my head around the idea that Jimbo and Riley are the only "top tier" coaches out there and if we hire anyone else we would be "settling." Personally, I've never been that enthusiastic about Jimbo, especially after he drove FSU into the ground. Riley might put up some good numbers against Big 12 defenses, but I don't think he's the second coming of Saban when it comes to building a consistently superior program.

And, quite honestly, each of them has a very good gig right now and there's really no burning reason for either of them to move. Yet some people on here are panicking over the possibility that we might "miss out" on one or the other of them and moaning that we must not be a top program if neither of them jumps at the chance to come to LSU.

Speaking of Saban, I seem to recall that when we hired him in 2000, he wasn't considered a "top tier" candidate. There are several intriguing "second tier" coaches out there that I think have the potential to be better then either Jimbo or Riley if they can get their hands on a major program. Let's hope Woodward makes the right choice. But I hope he's not as obsessed with "white whales" as some of the folks on this board.

Not so fast my friend….

The Chris Petersen theory is starting to make a whole lot of sense, especially after his long time OC and best friend lobbied for the Auburn job.

That Woodward knew O would implode and has had a silent agreement with CP for a long while. Petersen confided in Harsin so BH started lobbying hard for the Auburn job.

No doubt. Woodward appears to be failing on Tier 1 and LSU may now possibly looking at at lower Tier 2 like Stoops. And that is after offering at least $12 million which is 33% higher than Saban or even up to $15 million which is 66% higher than Saban. Plus having his all season long head public head start.
Sorry but that does not happen at a Top 5 coaching job where any idiot (like everybody calls Miles and Ogre) easily wins national championships. We better hope that whoever the coach ends up being can consistently get better than 7 - 5 records year after year.

There are times when I am convinced that the ownership of this board is in contact with elements of the LSU AD and that the AD uses posts here as a stalking horse to gauge fan reaction to certain developments. Seen in that light, Chicken's post reads like an attempt to dampen the forthcoming backlash against Woodward when he fails to retain a high-profile coach.

Do you notice all the downvotes you are receiving on this? There's a reason for that.

what does Woody having a deal with Petersen have to do with Harsin getting the Auburn job?

A patchwork top 10 class can still be worked out for LSU, and the transfer panel exists. Having a week or two with a new coach may have an effect on landing a handful of big recruits but in the grand scheme (i.e., a 5-year plan), that is immaterial. This hire is way bigger than one year's recruiting class.

What would that have to do with Petersen taking the LSU job?

Love the positive spin, but...

Saban was never a 2nd tier candidate.

Jimbo didn't run FSU into the ground.

SW doesn't have to settle for Napier, he has $12mn annually to spend.
