Canada and Bielema had issues over control of the offense

Just FYI, as I've seen many posters wondering why he didn't go to Arkansas. I've also seen Arkansas posters claiming he's not a good OC and Bert didn't want him, which is laughable.

quote:

With Paul Chryst leaving to take the head coaching job at Pitt after the 2011 season, Bielema, a defensive coach by trade, got more involved with the offense in 2012, at times overruling Canada’s plays and dismissing some of his ideas for sets, sources close to the program told the newspaper.

The butting of heads came to a head prior to the Big Ten title game, where Canada stood up to the coach and wanted control of the offense. He got that chance, and the result was a 640-yard outing by his unit, including 539 on the ground, in the 70-31 pasting of Nebraska. The Badgers ran plays and formations they had not used all season.

Canada acknowledged the meeting happened but downplayed the significance, saying, “There wasn't any clearing of the air."

quote:

Part of the reason Canada was reluctant to be so bold early on was that he had a healthy respect for the success that the Badgers’ offense had gained in recent seasons with a punishing running attack. So when he came on the job, he thought doing things the same way would work, until they didn’t. It showed on the field with a 3-2 start, including too-close-for-comfort wins in that stretch against Northern Iowa and Utah State. Standing up for what he believed in resulted in a third straight Rose Bowl bid for the team. "That was a special night," he said of the win earlier this month vs. Nebraska. "No doubt about it."

Not unlike Les. Too many hands in the offense's cookie jar.

If LSU is hiring Canada to pair with Aranda, then Alleva should have made a run at Bielema as HC to truly get the Badger crew back together

Love it. Would love to see that kind of creativity with LSU's talent.

Weird, Bielema never has done that here. Our fans wished he got more involved at times.

maybe he's learned a valuable lesson?

not to mention, Canada runs a pretty...unique...offense, so I could see a traditionalist like Bert not being overly enthusiastic about it.

Maybe, but we run a way more wide open offense than he did at Wisconsin.

Pittsburgh's top opponents this year, their national scoring defense ranking, and how many points Canada's offense put on them in parenthesis:

Penn St. – 35th (42 points)

Okie St. – 65th (38 points)

UNC – 46th (36 points)

Georgia Tech – 47th (37 points)

Va Tech – 29th (37 points)

Miami – 13th (28 points)

Clemson – 12th (43 points)

Duke – 67th (56 points)

This seems pretty promising...I haven't done his other, more mediocre years though. This is the first year outside of NIU that he's had 100% control over everything in the offense though.

Looks like the offense had a great day in the Big Ten Championship. Curious though - what happened in the Rose Bowl? Stats from that game look pretty bad.

Yeah, I'll be honest, I don't see any of those plays happening against Alabama, not a single one. There's nothing clever about that. I'm pretty disappointed with the hire, but we will see.

Well the good news in all of this is that O has sworn he will never intercede in play calling except in obvious cases like fourth down in a key SEC game to make the call to go or not. That is one thing about what O says that should be correct. So Canada will have no issue running the Offense with just about complete autonomy. Good fit for him right off the bat.

We are overlooking the same fact of why we ran a similar offense the rest of the year with O. You can't just tear up the playbook mid season. If this really happened and Canada said I am calling my game then he still had to run things they have been practicing and doing all year. Just more the way he wants to set up the game.

And Pelini's defense was soo pathetic
