His name sometimes comes up in the coaching rumor mill, and rightfully so, he took one of the worst programs in the FBS and actually made them respectable. Does Tulane have any chance to keep him if a Power 5 comes calling? As much as Wave fans desperately wanted a top 25 ranking and a chance to play for championship, it might have saved us in the long run that Tulane lost to Memphis and Navy.

He lost some luster lately. I see him staying green

Fritz has never had much luster. He went to Ga southern without much pressure; same to Tulane.
He's a workmanlike coach. His recruiting is solid, but it doesn't wow 'em. He's exactly what Tulane needs, but who would probably disappoint SEC schools whose real peak is 8-9 wins (which he can deliver) but who think they should contend for championships (even though they never have).

I didn't like that trick play on the kneel going into overtime.

It’s a legal formation you can run whatever play you want to out of it, and the whole point is to win the game, not play for overtime. Notice there was never anything close to resembling a kneel down.

The plus side for Tulane is lower expectations and more time for a coach to prove out.

The negative side for Tulane is the realistic low ceiling that Tulane has.

This makes Tulane a steppingstone for good coaches and a relatively safe space for not good coaches.

Result, Tulane replaces their coach every 3-5 years. Last winner Bowden left after 2. Longest loser Scelfo 9, but since 5, 4, and currently 4.

Fritz might be courted by a lower echelon P5 school and will jump if offered. Two winning seasons at Tulane doesn’t guarantee a third or fourth. And another losing year is death for his future.

Currently leading all other American Conference teams in recruiting, and 51st nationally, according to 247, which is better than every other LA school not named LSU.

I don't think the future at Tulane is as dim as you suggest.

Disagree. We have a national scholastic brand, we are located in the most fertile recruiting ground in the country and the school just built an on-campus stadium. It may take a while but being a top tier G5 team is in the cards and sooner rather than later.

If the dude cleans up LSU's scraps in New Orleans alone he should get some talent into that program.

I've always said Tulane should model their program after Northwestern (albeit smaller scale). They could recruit really well in a fertile area to sprinkle in athletes around the academically motivated 4 year "program" type players from around the country.

The great thing about sports talk is disagreement!

20 of 106 Tulane players are from Louisiana. To recruit that 247 51st class, Tulane has to recruit away from Louisiana. Tulane’s student body comes from and returns to not Louisiana. This makes it hard to put arses in seats. Tulane’s stadium is not full because the old die hard New Orleans fan base died. A “nationally scholastic brand” is not a positive athletically. While Tulane is the best Louisiana team not named LSU it still faces local competition for the fertile recruiting ground, plus Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, LSU, A1abama, Texas A$M, Arkansas, and even the likes of Vanderbilt for the scholarly inclined. Compare Arkansas and Vanderbilt TV exposure to Tulane’s.

Like the financial commercials say, past performance is not a guarantee of future performance, it is highly indicative. Let’s look at the last 40 years, because 1979 was a very good Tulane year.
Seasons winning-losing (assuming this year for all) 10-30. Bowls 8. Rankings 2.

Now let’s look at the last 18 (recruiting 17 and 18 year olds).
Seasons winning-losing (assumes this year again) 4-14. Bowls 4. Rankings 0.

Yes there will be good years and even an occasional very good to excellent one like 1998’s #7 ranked team. But these are few and far between. The next top 10 Tulane finish past 1998 is 1949. That’s 2 in the last 70 years. In other sports, Tulane has had a few good years, but mostly they are irrelevant. This is the reality of the situation.

Smart money is not on the 4 winners but on the 14 losers.

If Fritz is smart, he will jump, if offered, for the smart money.

It has a high ceiling.
The problem is that it has a low floor. if a coach doesn't know what he's doing, he'll go 3-8. At other places, the clueless can get 6 or 7 wins.
Recruiting locally is tricky: a new Tulane coach is inundated by NOLA area high school coaches expecting Tulane to sign their FCS level talent that has a 3.3 GPA; and if they balk, the coaches sulk and get offended. Fortunately, Fritz has been very disciplined on that end, did balk, and it's starting to pay off.
Good coaches always win at Tulane; the mediocre have no chance.
