The whole appeal with Shep is that since he played here there's a chance that, if successful, he never leaves.

I thought the goal is to hire a coach that wins, not one that “never leaves”. The only ones to leave of their own volition were Arnsparger and Saban.

similar to Kirby Smart

There is nothing similar to Kirby Smart’s resume about Shephard beyond being an alum. Smart was a successful DC at Alabama for 8 years with a proven track record as an elite recruiter. Save 1 year with the Dolphins he spent his entire career in college most of it (including his 1 year in the NFL) working for Saban, leaving from the best to ever do it. Shep has been a DC for only 7 games and spent his entire coaching career with the Lions. He was director of player personnel at LSU for 1 year.

Sorry you don’t hire someone just because he’s an alum which is the only reason Sheppard is being mentioned

Saban & Kirby Smart are the model for defensive coaches having success in college, and both coached in the nfl.

We need a coach for the transfer portal window, no way Detroit is not playing late into the season. I don’t think you fire BK to take a flier on someone, you truly cannot afford to take that chance.

But the point was that Sheppard doesn’t have hc experience. Kirby smart and Ryan day didn’t have hc experience either. And uga and osu are doing fine!!

What does a Kelvin Sheppard staff look like at LSU? Who are his guys? What connections does he have he can call upon to build a staff to his liking?

Maybe he'll be solid in a few years, but as of right now he's got a year of "played development" in college and 7 games as a DC in the NFL.

There are a ton of question marks.

Obviously, I mean the appeal is that if you hit on Shep then he has the potential to be unattainable to everyone else bc he's at his alma mater. The upside being similar to Kirby Smart. Idk how else to say it. Obviously he has to win, but anyone else who wins multiple championships will get poached but it's different when you have an alum. Not saying Sheppard is capable of that, but he's the only current possibility with that sort of dynasty upside.

Now you're just making strawman arguments. The only comp I made to Kirby was that he's unattainable bc he's at his alma mater.

I don't know that Shep is the best hire or not. He comes with a ton of risk and I'm not sure that he has the right connections yet to fill out a good staff. But the appeal is that he has more upside for LSU than anyone else because we are his alma mater and I'm not sure how you can argue that

Compare it to someone like Brian Hartline. If he comes in here and wins a championship he will be the HC at OSU shortly after. That's fine if you're A&M and just want one championship. But we've been there done that

Sheppard will look for a NFL job. If he does a good job with Detroit he's a candidate for a NFL job. Why take a step down unless you are forced to do it. I think the days of NFL coaches head and assistant going down to college football are over with NIL and the extra headaches.

He’d be light years better than some random G5 coach with no affiliation to the school or the South. I’m just saying he’d be a good fallback plan when all of our hopes and dreams die with Kiffin.

I always forget how Les Miles left LSU for Michigan and that Dabo is now at Bama. Vince Dooley went to Auburn and never left UGA and the Auburn job was open a lot.

You’re way to hung up on the coaching for your school model, most coaches don’t even the “dynasties”. And the fretting over the successful coach leaving for his school is just silly, it really never happens. The only coach that left LSU went to the NFL, seems that would be a bigger concern when hiring a coach from the pros.

Sheppard is just being thrown out there because he’s an alum and that’s worst reason to hire a coach.

Sounds simple enough.

I'm kidding; it's not. No one at this level is going to hand the keys to this monstrosity over to someone who's never done this. Think recruiting a BASS Master Champion to be Commander of the USS Enterprise because he drives a Triton. That just isn't going to happen.

But....just my .02....If I'm proven wrong, I'll admit it- as I watch the entirety of the LSU brass get run out of town.
