Maybe so, but I don’t believe the next coach will have zero experience as a head coach.

again why?

we just went with the established coach that had the most experience in CFB, winningest coach etc

and he was getting out coached by 1st time head coaches left and right.

This isnt 1992 anymore.

I’m not sure why people are so opposed to it. This is a new landscape. We have the best GM in the game we don’t need a guy that has experience with the off the field BS we have an army of guys to do that. If he’s got the Xs and Os down why wouldn’t we want to consider him if the big fish don’t bite?

You do understand that the LSU job is a massive job and considered one of the top jobs in the country?

You have to have a résumé more than a five years experience

How many years did Nick Saban have to work before he even got his first head coaching job at where the heck was it up north Ball State or something like that I don’t remember

Went to the Browns for a couple of years as the defense coordinator under Belichick everybody knows this

Then got the Michigan State job

Come on people wake the freak up

It may be a new era of how you get players, but you gotta be able to coach! You have to understand how to lead a big program like LSU… you don’t learn how to do that working for the Detroit Lions.

You gotta know what the hell you’re doing

Is it bigger than when the patriots hired Jerod Mayo?
How about when the Lions hired Dan Campbell?
Or the Steelers and Mike Tomlin?
Ravens and John Harbaugh?
Texans and Demeco Ryans?

I know a lot of yall quit watching the NFL several years ago so yall might need to go do some reading

Are we hiring an influencer to run this program? C'mon.

This is LSU. We need a proven HC that is a winner. We aren't UTEP.

I wouldn't look for that.

LSU has the ability to hire someone who has already competed- and won- in the SEC.

Lately?
More games than us at what is (or perhaps was) perceived to be a lower tier SEC school.

There's no current SEC HC who has won as much as we want to that is attainable. If anything they have all proven they aren't up to the standard and youre better off taking a chance on the next guy. And spare me the "Lane will get more talent here" narrative. By the time we pay for him and Kelly, the amount left for recruiting will make the difference between our talent vs what he has at OM negligible. Also he was able to get whatever players he wanted at USC.

I'm tired of hearing "we are LSU, we should be able to get a proven HC." How about "We are LSU. We found the first Saban we should be able to find the next."

Plenty of NFL coaches today are directly hired from coordinator positions.

Usually they do more than inherit a good defense on a superbowl contender. Anyone who wasn’t an idiot would do well in his situation in the structure DC has built with an offense that allows you some leeway.

I’m all about having a young hungry guy, but the guy has built absolutely nothing to this point in his career.

But i also think it would be widely criticized by LSU fans at the moment of the hire.

I was mostly being facetious… Saban is never coming back l know.. just that he the only wa I would like this scenario of us getting Kelvin… Kelvin could be a phenomenal hire just I don’t think he’s ready but if you got him here and he had an older coach to help groom him a little more I think he’d be better… just needs a little more experience and coaching in college

Totally get your point, and you are right, but Georgia would have a different HC right now with that same thinking.

Kirby Smart had 8 years of coordinator experience before he became a HC.(17yrs total as an asst)

Kelvin Shepard has 8 games of coordinator experience. (4yrs as a position coach previously).

Surely you see the difference huh

People say/ask this as if it is some sort of intelligent argument.

Tell me, who is in the mix that "has won" something? What had Saban won before he got here? Miles? O?

You have to look at what they have achieved with the situation they are in.

Kiffin has won more than anyone in the modern era in Ole Miss's history. He is overachieving for a school that can only get roster talent that ranks in the 20-30 range.

Drinkwitz has taken a program that was consistently recruiting with classes ranked above 40 and has multiple classes in the Top 20. He is achieving above expectations in the SEC at Mizzou. He will still not win a championship there because Mizzou will never get the talent needed to win it all. But he is a damn good coach. Weird, but good.

Lanning is doing very well, but the reservation I have is he should do what he is doing with the talent they can bring in at Oregon. He would do great here if he would come, which is probably doubtful.

After that, there are several good coaches, just less proven to be able to run a big program, Maybe one can take us to multiple championships. It is more of a gamble, but may be worth it. I have no idea.

But back to the question. It is unreasonable to expect a coach at a school that will never have Top 10 talent to win a championship.

no one is clamoring for Bobbby Babich, are they? Do you even know who that is?

what about Zach Orr?

Anthony Campanile?

Nick Rallis?

All these guys are recently promoted DC's in the NFL that were former LB coaches

because no DC without any connection to LSU would go coach college

NFL lifestyle is unquestionably better, i doubt even Sheppard would take the job if offered
