Bumpas getting defensive play from Patterson

im watching the bowl game and it looked like patterson was figuring out what to do and then he and bumpas both called the play in. 
maybe there is some truth to the story that patterson is the mastermind, not bumpas

Watching the game it wasnt hard to see who ran the defense. TCU won because the defense never let up or lost faith in the cause. Even though they got behind they never let up.

Talked to a buddy of mine last night who went to TCU and goes to every home game every year. I asked him specifically who was the defensive guru, Patterson or Bumpas? Without hesitation he said Patterson without a doubt.

I have to admit that I flipped around, but what I did watch of the game, Patterson seemed to be in control, getting onto the linebackers and making defensive calls.

Mudminnow, do you remember that you mentioned "Dick Bumpas" in a thread back in November that was titled "Best Defensive Coordinator" and posed the question:
"Who are the best possible defensive coordinator candidates should Les Mile remove Mallory-Peveto?"

Pelini wasn't bad but neither was he anyone to write home about. Had we had something other than stellar talent his three years, all you know what would've broken loose.

You guys are ridiculous. Pelini has been a DC 5 years in the NCAA. His worst ever defense was 13th overall. 11,13,3,3,3 are his finishes. UN was 55th before he got there, then 11th, then when he left dropped to 56th. OU dropped to 89th after Bo left. LSU dropped to...well you know.
He may not run the defense people WANT him to run, but if his name was Saban he'd be hailed as a defensive genius running the defense he DOES run and the stats he puts up.

Pelini's D was aimed at stopping the run FIRST.
Now, he knew it well enough to adjust and work on the pass to some degree, but only with mediocrity.
when facing THE PASS, Pelini seemed to me to use ONE concept RUSH and HURRY the passer so as to keep him from being able to throw downfield...
this kept some QBs from exploiting our D because of the lack of time/timing....
this helped him a lot and kept his D rankings up....but HIS D is not aimed at the passing game.
We also, did not play a lot of teams using the spread during his tenure.(some, but not that many)
all in all...HE knew how to achieve above average results with it......but still not a great passing D scheme in and of itself.

A lot of people thought Saban was the brains and Muschamp just carried out the plan. It was probably true at the time. But it didn't mean Muschamp wasn't learning and wouldn't be a capable DC one day. Infact, I think most people would say he is one today. Don't know a damn thing about Bumpas. Just saying.
