I think he will do well (relatively) at Illinois. Midwestern guy will get some Midwestern big uglies to play for him, and expectations will be low. Perfect fit.

Holy shite that is waaaaaaaaaaay too much money for dude. Why does Illinois always pay too much money for washed up coaches? Whats this? Three in a row now? I thought this would be good for both of them with him being a cheap retread and them getting the occasional winning season but they just keep stepping on their own dick.

People need to get over this. This isn’t 2005. G5 schools are paying $3 million per year now.

I understand that but what is the point? Why pay $5 million to an old fat coach when you can pay $1 million to an up and coming young coach who will have as much if not more success?

It isn't like Bert is some great coach who will take Illinois to the playoffs.

They are just giving away money for no reason.

you're spot on

he will immediately start counting his money the minute he gets there and it will diminish his work ethic for the job

Great hire. There is no reason he can't get the same type player to come to Illinois that he recruited at Wisconsin. It is a very easy division to get 6-9 wins a year and that is all he will need to make 4 million a year as long as he would like.

The main reason being that he's lazy as hell, especially when he's under a big contract. Hell, one of the reasons he went to the NFL was because he wouldn't have to recruit.

Bert basically fell into a sewer and came up with a gold watch, since Arkansas stopped paying his buyout because he was too lazy to even show interest in seeking an HC job for the last few years, so this is his way to make up for the unexpected cessation of the buyout payments.

If the AD at Illinois has half a brain and access to Google, he would've put some guardrails in the contract.

Teams in that division can get 6-9 wins precisely because they get to play teams like Illlinois every week. That's like saying that at least Vandy is in the SEC East where there are easier teams....like Vandy.

Yeah anyone who doesn’t think this ends with Illinois paying a giant buyout in 3-4 years needs to research Bert more.

Everyone throws the “5 wins maybe 8-9” number out there when a washed up coach takes a job at a shitty school, and he’ll realistically win 3-4 per year at the most and be fired in 3 years with fewer than 10 total career wins. Bookmark this, he’s washed as shite and the game has changed a relevant amount since he was last on the sidelines

Good hire for them. Bret is a good coach who's style fits up there.
