Brent Brennan has spent the past seven seasons building the San Jose State program after over two decades as a college assistant. Now he's poised for an opportunity to take over a Power Five program. Multiple outlets shared late last night that Brennan has emerged as the top target for the opening at Arizona. The Wildcats job became available when Jedd Fisch left for Washington job. Jason Scheer, who covers the program, added that Brennan has been offered the job.

[Thamel] Source: Arizona and Brent Brennan have agreed to a 5-year deal to make him the school’s next football coach.

Pretty uninspiring. If I was an Arizona fan, I'd rather hire an up and coming assistant and hope you hit like they did on Fisch.

As an Arizona fan happy about this. SJSU might be the most difficult job in the nation. They were averaging a bowl game every 10 years when Brennan came in and their roster was decimated.

His record is blah because the cupboard was totally bare his first two years there, but he's had them in a bowl 3 of the last 4 years, which is easily a high water mark for SJSU.

SJSU literally had to have fundraisers to afford a training table for their players, they are so underfunded. Being a consistent bowl team there is a big deal.

Insiders at Arizona think Brennan has a good chance of keeping the current roster mostly intact and that would be huge in a good start here. He also was very close to Dick Tomey and the belief is he is more likely to be loyal to us than Fisch, who used us as a stepping stone.

It's not a sexy hire, but I'm of the mind it's a guy who has consistently shown he can do more with less and has a real chance to build on our talent where another coach might have to start over with everyone leaving in the portal.

That's correct, that's what I referred to above as fundraisers for training table. Brennan was doing standalone fundraisers just to get breakfast for his players.

That's a big line of thinking, if Brennan could have SJSU in a good place with basically zero institutional support, if we give him support, he can use the program building skills and apply it to P5 talent. Hopefully that allows him to take his consistent 7 wins at SJSU to 8 or 9 here and make a run at a conference title every few years.

Big drop from Fisch, but honestly this isn’t a bad hire for Arizona. Definitely a safe hire, but not a bad one.

he'll last 4-5 years then be canned. and he won't be able to retain key parts of the arizona roster. this is a total disaster for arizona.

They got lucky with Fisch. This isn't a bad hire.
