Texas is expected to target Houston coach Tom Herman as its top choice. LSU is expected to target both Herman and Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. If Herman ends up as the top target for both, it will be fascinating to see which one he chooses. Herman is a former graduate assistant at Texas and has much stronger ties there as opposed to Louisiana. (Herman's coaching path went through Sam Houston State, Texas State and Rice.) There are strong arguments for each program, but Herman's experience in the state of Texas and his having spent time at the school would appear to give UT an edge. That's by no means definitive, as there are many variables and positives and negatives at each place. While both have great tradition and recent national championships, neither is a paragon of stability. When top-tier coaches evaluate where they want to work, they want stable leadership overseeing them.

Herman is going to Texas. That much is certain

One positive in LSU's favor regarding Herman is that it plays in the SEC. The Big 12 is fricking dumpster fire. I know some people think that it is a negative because its easier to play in the Big 12 but coaches want to coach against the best. Look no further than A&M. Since they have come into the conference they have more of a national presence now as opposed to when they were in the Big 12. Also Texas is a big reason the Big 12 is a Dumpster fire.

That's certainly your opinion.

But then again, look how weak the Big 12 is. Much easier to win there than it would be to win in the SEC west.

If they let go of Charlie I agree.

If LSU, Texas, USC, and ND are all shopping for Herman this offseason, how much does he end up getting? My guess is $6.5 million per year

Eh, we haven't seen the benefit of it yet because Strong is so stupid and inept, but the upside is that it is a much easier path to the playoff. If UTx has a coach like Herman who is able to actually harness their strengths as a program people will be complaining about how easy UTx has it instead of making fun of (deservedly) what a dumpster fire the conference is. I don't like that, it's bad for A&M, but the truth is there's an upside to the "Twelve" being such a crap conference - if the one school that has more resources than the others gets a coach better than the others, they'll absolutely dominate it year-in-year-out and always make the playoffs.

Herman will likely end up in Austin, but that is going to be a tough situation. UTx is a meddlesome shitshow.

if it were baylor, texas tech, k state, i see your point.
its freaking Texas, they will go wherever they hell they want. im pretty sure they will be just fine if the Big 12 folds. thats the least of his worries

I'm sure living in Austin is pretty doggone awesome being paid $7 million per is pretty awesome but playing in that conference is crap and it's going to take some time to rebuild that program and he's going to live under a lot of heat but hey whatever

I mean, I guess that's good news?
But first, we'd all like to know in detail why Florida State has a very bad defense right now.

It's this kind of arrogant thinking that got them where they are in the first place.

If Texas gives up the longhorns network they can go wherever they want. I don't see the pac, acc or big10 letting that network into their conference. That's what started the fracturing of the big12, well, along with the way texas acts.
